It's official - skydiving is cool

Recommended Posts

Hey folks --

The BBC has just posted on their web site results from a poll entitled "50 Things To Do Before You Die" (at http://www.bbc.co.uk/50/destinations/things/). Our favorite activity/passion/obsession/life style/money sink showed up as #6.

So, we do on a regular basis what most view as an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience -- we must be doing something right, eh!?! ;)

Just reading the description of skydiving on that website, apparently there are 30000 BPA members (does that include students? at the AGM they said we only had 5390) and a crap quote:

'It's better than a bungy because you freefall at 200mph. You get a sense of freedom and pride.'

swim with dolphins.... MY ARSE!

ITs far more interesting to swim with the Orcas.... Scared the shit out of me the first time I saw one while diving in the Straights of Juan de Fuca. I am SOOOO glad I did not look like a seal.. one big ass eye just sitting there looking at you from 5 ft away... and you instantly KNOW that someone is really home in there. I have been priveledged to sail with many species of whales over the years..as they have come along side the boat while under sail.. very inspiring to be that small next to them.
So #4 is done
#5 was a given if spearfishing in the Florida Keys.. seems they were always around.
#6.. well only about 600 jumps so far but its still cool every time
#7... better to just combine 6 and 7
#8 is a kick...I miss Mike:(
#10 is great as long as you dont have to spend a whole month there when its -65 degrees below zero.. and you are camping in that shit.... and no that was WITHOUT the windchill
#13.. those are hard to find... anywhere in the Pacific that has fresh water seems to be inhabited with too many people.
#15 Oregon and Washington have LOTS of rivers that freakin ROCK
#17 after doing #6.. is a yawner but a good joy ride
#18 is too easy to do... and crowded especially in winter going to Lake Louise.
#19.... well some of it is still out there.. one lonely stretch out by Cadiz California was memorable.
#20 is too short
#24 is... uh not what it used to be;)
#27 when combined with #15 is exilerating.. YEEEEEE HAAAAA
#30... gettting harder to do all the time..but the Olympic National Park.. Hoh River Trail is SPECTACULAR
#31 is uh.. fun but washing down the salt off the horse.. smells interesting.
#34... wish I had known some people who didnt think it was so boring. Maybe I need some of the natives next time.
#35... any particular airplane??Beech 18 counts..but a nice biplane would be better.
#37.. in an ultralight over Mt St Helens... was too cool for words flying around INSIDE the crater.
#38... brrrrrr been there done that.. nice doggies
#39.... North side of Mt Adams in WA state.. has a couple REALLLY interesting glaciers to walk up... but the crevasses can be very dangerous. Very steep and icefalls after 10 am are a bitch.
#40.. hmmm only have about 9 of the better ones. There just is not enough time to get to them all.. although some people do try... but after #6 again... well. why bother.
#41... I still have my grandfathers Penn 12/0 on the biggest rod most people have ever seen. its 3/4 of an inch thick at the rod tip. The Marlin are too spectacular to take home to eat. Best to stick to the big tuna's
#42 The places on the Oregon coast just south of Tillimook Oregon with the updrafts off the ocean hitting the hills near Cape Mears.. with a nice soft beach to land on just to the North of what was once the town of Bay Ocean OR.... relazing and refreshing.
#43... YUCK no desire ever... have I mentioned how much I hate golf???
#47 Walts place.. come on... give me a break... maybe for the Brits this is a big deal... but my mom was born in Palatka FL. just up the road. Yawn
#48....interesting.. I am SOOOO glad I never got to be permanent party at Nellis AFB. TDY was enough
#50... well who is watching who.... there are two or 3 animals on this planet I really do not trust.... Sharks.. and bears....you just can never predict how they are going to act on a given day

Well there are a few things left to do in this lifetime.
#28 I would have to put the Space thing at the TOP on the list as well.
No Base jumping...anywhere on the list...thats just wrong.

Some of the things have to wait till better times.

I think they must have cleaned the list up a bit for broadcast, surely there were some "join the mile high club" type votes in there?

I managed a pathetic 2 out of 50 but in my defence once you start #6 there's not alot of time for any of the others!

Yes, quite true... Have been up close and personal with Bears, and around Sharks, but memories of invading the environment of Crocs and Gators still gives me a quickened pulse, many years removed... NO desire to repeat!

# 10 is good - Aurora Borealis. You havent seen anything until you have watched a real good show. Us Canucks know what its like... I live in a city, so cant usually see them from home, but its fun to sit in the hottub at the dropzone and watch them.
6, 10, 15, 17, 25, 27, 38... I think im doing pretty good.

Having grown up around gators I dont sweat them too much they just scamper away and hide.. UNLESS you get too near a big mound of leaves out in the swamp... then its time to make a hasty retreat before mama gator realizes you are around. Crocs on the other hand, I have not ever really been in their environment in other places.... or at least when I was someplace with them never saw them. We have some in South Florida and we once thought we saw some from the air, but they are so rare as to be nearly extinct, so not telling if they were crocs or gators down below. We were up too high to ascertain by the shape or the color.

Bears and sharks.. I have seen up close and far too personal on more than one occsion.

I can claim 5 off the list. I can't believe Vegas Casinos is all the way down at 48! I think the flight over a volcano was similarly frightening (beforehand) to my first skydive, and almost as cool. As much as I've been bitten by skydiving, I have no desire to try bungie jumping (well, as of yet), and I'll probably die not having swam with the sharks!

What's up with "bathing an elephant (#22)?" Who would even think of that? And why is it higher on the list than, say, wingwalking (#35), or climbing Kilimanjaro (#36)?

Because elephants have a prehensile "finger" at the end of their trunk - a naughty elephant might be fun.

DISNEY WORLD ??? Oh please.... I'd rather visit a really pricey Nevada brothel.

Exactly! When I can see them, I'm a lot less nervous. However, when slogging or swimming through swamps that harbor these creatures, there is added incentive to be stealthy...

I never had a tangle with any Crocs or Gators, although I knew them to be present. There were others that, at least once that I know of, had to "dispatch" one that took an unhealthy (for the Croc as it turns out) interest in what it took to be a potential meal wading by. Thank goodness they in a shallow canal, and were able to see it coming!
