Empuriabrava

Recommended Posts

Have been out of jumping for a couple of years but I am finally getting back into it this year. Am looking to book a week or two in Empuriabrava in the summer and just interested to know what people think. Who has been? Good/bad experiences?

Thanks for your inputB|

Have a look in Places to jump as there have been quite a few threads on it there.

In short it is a beautiful DZ, located near to a fun town with plenty of stuff to do. You will find coaching available for all levels and in all disciplines. A great DZ - highly recommended. And the views in freefall are amazing! The only downside is the Tramontana (mountain winds) which can sometimes come in for 3 days at a time. But if they do, just hit the nearest bar or the on-site go-kart track or in summer the on-site swimming pool.

The only time I’ve been in Empuria In summer was August 2002. Apart from losing the first couple of days to wind, the weather was by and large beautiful! As has been said the town will be PACKED with tourists in summer (and apparently August is the busiest tourist month) – expect to pay through the nose for accommodation!

Empuria is an excellent place to jump - though the landing area can be a little tighter than some are used to. The town is excellent - and back on to the DZ. In Aug the weather is generally excellent but the town is packed and accommodation excellent. Top tip is the pizza van which lives in the car park of the nearest supermarket. Cheap and superb.

been there last summer... first two weeks of august.. did not really like it... mainly because of the wind and only having 100 jumps then.

drove 1900 km to hang around for a week and only make 9 or 10 jumps... luckily me and my buddies were smart enough to get out of that place and get our asses to france ( soulac ) were we stayed 2 days and make more jumps then in a week at empuria.

they wont be seeing me there as long as i don`t have at least 400 jumps....

not bashing the DZ just telling my experiences

empuria isn't very nice if you do not have more than 400 jumps.... but damn i love the planes they have :)

Jelle, what was the problem??? I've only been there once, during the european championships so everything was hectic. But I sure liked it. It was the first foreign dz and the third dz total for me to jump at. I didn't have 400 jumps yet, in fact I had like 205 and grounded myself once when a 200 jump limit was posted. We all got grounded by Tramanotana for another day or 2 but we amused ourselves otherwise. I liked the Otters, a Porter I can jump out of here as well, but still a nice plane. Accomodations were good. The staff speaks all kinds of languages. Jump tickets are less then in Holland. The weather is generally much nicer. Besides a bit of wind sometimes, what's not to like?

I didn't jump my ass of because I was there for another reason, but I could've...

fully like to sign what you said... have been there 4 times, looking forward to coming x-mas boogie next week.... and i jumped even below far than 400 and enjoyed it..

tramonatana is a mess. but every dz has its own weather conditions, isn't it? and during tramontana, you still have good chances for getting sun burned [:/] even in november... this is much more funny than sitting grounded somewhere else in europe w/o any sunshine.

this is no ad for empuria, i simply enjoyed it and this my personal memory :)

Yup it sure is a nice suit! Now I'm waiting for some nice weather tho...

Freefly coaching there is somewhat expensive. But just jumping your ass off shouldn't be a problem; if I manifested I never got more then a 10 min call. 10 jumps a day is doable, with a nice lunchbreak in the middle. Don't know how many jumps you were planning on making :S Like I said, what was the problem??

Only real problem with low jump numbers is the wind. not so much the tramontana - if that happens you just have to wait it out. If the wind blows accress the runway they tend to put a limit on as the landing area is quite thin that way.

Couple of summers ago I was there and the limit was around 400 most of the time. OTOH you can get by without any wind to speak of.

mostly between 200 and 400

no nice weather this weekend im afraid. :(

dazzle: that was exactly what happened...

maybe i sound a little dramatic about it. i really had a great time there and made some jumps
but hoped for more

200 and 400

You know, when the staff puts out the 400 jump limit, I dont jump unless I feel very stupid (yes, that happens on occasion ;)). If its very windy there's plenty enough to do around Empuria...

That said, any drop zone can get bitchy winds. Whenever your on a coast, you get nice views, but the tradeoff is usually more winds. Same in florida.

In my experience, generally when it gets up to a 400 jump limit, most of the staff stop jumping and just sit and watch… there’s a reason for that! :S

I’ve jumped in 400 jump limits a few times and every time I’ve wished I’d stayed on the ground.

I have been there three times, August last year, and July and October this year, I originally did my AFF there. It is a fantastic dropzone, the best out of the 3 I have been to, and even on the windy days the group of people you meet keep you amused. The sea isn't very far away (about 1-2 miles) and you can go kite-surfing there and waterskiing a few miles further away. And the nightlife is great in the evenings. All in all you won't get bored. You don't get quite as much attention from the staff as you would do at the British dz's (IMO) but as its mainly fun jumpers out there everyone is more than happy to give you advice or jump with you. I have been laid off a month or two with shoulder problems but will definately start off the new season out there in Feb/March time.

true .. when there is a 400 JL its almost suicidal to go up.

and again im not bashing the DZ just the wind that was there last august.

without wind its paradise :)
