wildchild 0 #26 January 18, 2004 The first jump of the weekend is the worst. Then it turns more to excitement.
TribalTalon 0 #27 January 19, 2004 hmm. well actually the plane ride doesnt bother me at all, because i love airplanes. i actually like to just ride in the front whenever i'm not jumping but yeah, when that door opens, my heart skips a beat or two and my mind goes into over drive. perfectly normal, and honestly, if that adrenline ever goes away, its not even worth jumping anymore. XWuffo 0 #28 January 19, 2004 I have been scared of course, but more when I am thinking about skydiving than when I am really doing it. However, I just read the story above. If I were her, I would be scared too! The equipment that was used back then is so different than what we have now. The yechnology is much more advanced now and I think that I have confidence in our gear and what we know, which makes me less scared. Blue skies and SAFE landings! ~Amanda~ ________________________ *** Oh boy I would LOVE to get hold of one of these yechnology rigs.........sounds awsome to me ! weekendwonder 0 #29 January 19, 2004 Sure is. Fear of heights is a primal thing, so is it surprising the idea of jumping out of an airplane more than 2 miles up tends to raise the anxiety levels a bit? A little fear/apprehension makes you (me, anyway) more alert/attentive to the details, and hopefully safer. When you take things for granted is when bad stuff happens. Use it, don't dwell in it. Blues, Bob P. Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Statistics prove that. The harness and container system are smaller and more comfortable, but not safer. In my opinion the only safety improvement of any significance is the Cypres automatic opener. Other than the Cypres, it is a myth that skydiving is safer today than it once was. Ed D-1521
grega 0 #31 January 19, 2004 hmm i don't have the same opinion. I think the skydiving did get safer, only that the majority of skydivers got stupider at the same time. "George just lucky i guess!"
kelel01 1 #32 January 19, 2004 QuoteI think the skydiving did get safer, only that the majority of skydivers got stupider at the same time. I'll agree with that. It's kind of human nature. We implement new safety techniques, and people just have to continue to push the envelope. That, and there's more canopies in the air, hence, the increased number of canopy collisions. Anyway, back to the topic, oddly enough, I'm most nervous when gearing up and getting on the plane. Once the plane starts taxi-ing, I'm good to go. And then my apprehension comes back once open and dealing with canopy traffic. If there's no traffic, I feel a lot less nervous. Kelly
jaybo 0 #33 January 19, 2004 __________________________________________________ I am always scared until I leave the plane. Then the fear disappears. I can't explain it. I guess I realize that I can't get back into the plane. __________________________________________________ Ain't that the truth! Did you read the thread where someone named the door the Gaping Maw of Hell? Maybe thats a little much, but ya gotta love the excitment of the first jump of the day. Watching the RW folks leave first, feeling the plane buck up with their departure. It's almost time to go...moving back to the door....it's clear...spots good.... Man, I'm too amped to continue typing, better get back to work.
