Of 3 brothers and One sister,, one bro' did a static line in 1979 or so,,( He has been an Air Traffic Controller for almost 20 yrs ) ,, one did a tandem in 2001 and my sister attended a training class for a static line course,,,but was weathered out,, and never had a chance to accomplish the dive..In recent years an older cousin made a static line jump then HER daughter did a tandem,,, and 2 other cousins have also made tandems,,,,, ( ALLLL MY fault,,, I suppose ) ..... I have skydived into the back yard of My Dad's Home for a July 4th Picnic on 2 occassions,,, once in 1980 and once in 1996... It is exciting to freefall and parachute over the very land ,,, on which you ran around as a toddler, child, and young adult.. ( what a view ) The first time... My namesake Grandfather who was 80 something at the time was the first to shake my hand,, when I landed... ( everybody else scattered... but HE stood his ground,,, and I touched down maybe 8 feet from where he stood !!!! hahahahThe second time I wore my video camera... o[:-) to share the images with everyone... Nowadays the immediate family comes to the DZ from time to time,, My wife is a pretty good sport,,, though nervous on a ladder, and cares " not to make a skydive,, thank you very much" !!!!!.. But our daughter and i shared a tandem a year ago or so,, and perhaps our son will jump this summer... Diversity and "interesting hobbies" add to the flavor of a well balanced family.....Some folks can be set in their ways,,,and if they are wary of Jumping,,, they will miss out on the amazing,, and colorful visuals and behaviors which can be enjoyed at a dropzone... their loss..... pics. are of My daughter,, and my oldest brother.. skytash 0 #27 March 15, 2004 my family is quite cool about it, my 4 year-old nephew was telling one of his friends the other day and the look on his face that the 'mad aunt' jumps out of planes! In terms of watching, my sister was rather brave and came to do a tandem when I was still on crutches recovering from a bad landing - she had been helping me out at home while I was recovering and then just announced she wanted a go! tashDon't ever save anything for a special occasion. I won't ever be able to get my mom in the plane for an observer ride, but she loves seeing "the pretty canopys appear in the sky". Don't know what'd happen if any of them saw an accident though. weegegirl 2 #29 March 15, 2004 I don't fall into any of those catagories. I didn't have to try all that hard to get my family to come see me, but they don't bother me a lot to come out all the time. Last year I had a really fun day at the dz. 1/2 my family came out... mom, sister and her son, different brother-in-law and his son... it was a lot of fun. The two boys were 3 and 5 years old. Our pilot waited till they were down fueling and before we got started back up, he took the two little ones for a tour of the plane. He let them sit in the pilot seat and right seat and pretend to fly. He even put the headsets on them. They left with the hugest smiles ever saying that they wanted to be pilots and skydivers. Mom was hesitant at first but really loved to see me fly my parachute. Now she jokes about how long it took her to get the nerve to come out. My sister could care less. And my brother-in-law lives vicariously through me. His wife (my other sister) won't let him jump till there kids are 18. The only thing my family thinks is "irresponsible" is base jumping. murphyka 0 #31 March 15, 2004 My sister and brother-in-law came out when I was supposed to do my first solo. The weather turned bad and I didn't get to jump that day. They haven't been back to see me after 70 jumps under my belt. Everytime I have invited them back, they hesitate. No one in my family shows that much interest in seeing me jump in person so I bore them with my videos. It kind of sucks that my father shows no interest in coming to see me. When I was younger, I don't think that he ever missed any of my games in any of the sports I played, even if I was not in the game. My brother and his kids think it's kuhl, but I'm also nuts. My dad is so excited to do a tandem when I go back home next time and I would love to be on the load with him. My mom just loves to watch, socialize at the DZ, and ask a million questions. She sports her Mardi Gras Boogie tshirt and pin necklace every chance she gets. After each weekend that I'm at the DZ, she asks how my landings are coming along..and of course she asked every detail of what I learned on Safety Day. My sister in law and soon to be brother in law jump. So its kind of a family thing for me. dgm458 0 #39 March 16, 2004 With a grand total of 25 jumps, my wife has been out several times to my new DZ (only an hour from the house), my oldest daughter (13) and a friend of hers came out once to see the "cute guys," and my youngest comes out frequently with me. My wife would like to do a tandem, but doesn't want to pay for it. The only activity my oldest will ever be involved in is the motion of getting up from the couch to answer the phone, and my 8 year old dirt dives all the time. My brother jumps with me (started about the same time), but my parents are skeptical. We lost our sister at a young age and my mom can't keep the "danger" of the sport out of her head, so she worries about losing another I think. My mother was the last one to accept it, but now she shows the freefall photos to her friends. My grandchildren come out and watch on occassion. My wife went into labor with my son (now a sometimes jumper) at the airport and I missed a lift that day. She could have waited, don't you think? My brother really wants to make an AFF 1 jump. My mom made a tandem. My grandma used to come and watch me all the time. I think she's been to more dropzones than most jumpers! skychic79 0 #48 March 16, 2004 When my husband and I did our first tandem, my family knew we where going and my mom asked me to call her when i landed. My dad was in denial. Now my faimly jokes about the two of us, saying that once we started skydiving they knew we were going to get married and having a skydiver on top of the cake. My mother is willling to come out and actually been to the DZ with me before we started the AFF course to check it out. Of course my mother has always been more open minded. My dad says no but more than likely come out a little bit after i get my A license. His folks aren't too thrilled to watch either but evenuatelly will.
