Jumping Hiatus... I want to WANT to come back (help)

Recommended Posts

I've gotten alot of training in since September of 2004,
unfortunatly, I need and have been on hiatus from the
sport to get alot of life options in order, and I plan to
start jumping again within the year but the magic is leaving
me. I've been in love with skydiving since I was 11 and
couldn't wait to get my first jump in. 11 years later I
tandemed and did my AFF, and it was everything I thought
it would be and more. (the jump, the people, the people,
the jump, the jump, the people, you get the point...) Lately
I've been having the out of site out of mind kind of thing
going... Im wondering, for anyone who has left the sport
and had total loss of conciousness for it, when you came
back, how was it for you? were you nervous? did "that
feeling" return on the ride upto altitude? did you fall
back in love? more in love? less in love? what changed
from before... I want to know these things because
I love skydiving.. I know I love it, but lately it just feels
like something is missing....

anyone?....

I've only been in the sport since 9/11/2004 myself, and am feeling alot like you. But, even though sometimes wonder if I will be able to give up my life as I now know it(skydiving-welcome to the world of the financially irresponsible, right?), I know I will jump again. Your numbers are higher, but I think the most difficult thing we face is how we think. I think and feel like I'm not a skydiver yet, but not a whuffo either. But I think just by posting here and visiting the forums, you know that skydiving may not actually be "out of [your] mind". Sometimes I too feel like the magic is leaving, but I know I haven't played with it enough to let it go. I plan on making a comeback this spring and giving it all I can. I would love to hear the answers to all your questions too. In the meantime, dream, read, talk, plan, watch, study skydiving. We may blend in with the rest of the wuffos,
but we both know why we are constantly looking up at the sky. Hope to see you in the skies soon!

I've only been in the tunnel. I put an hour and a half in at the beginning of the year, then took 7 months off because of poverty. I was wondering if it would come back too. When I went back in a week ago, it was like riding a bike, and came right back.

I think the reccomended thing to do in your case is to get an instructor to do some recurrency jumps with you, to make sure your safely back in the saddle :)

I have been in the sport for four years and live in canada, therefore there is a mandatory 8.5 month lay off every year (minimum). Despite this I come back every year with an increased gratitude to be back in the sky. You say that you are having the "out of sight out of mind syndrome"; what I would recommend that you do is sign on to skydivingmovies.com. That always reminds me how much skydiving really means to me and fortifies my need to get back in the sky.

CHEERS.

Hope to see you out there someday...:)

I've been there and doing that right now.

I had 20 jumps over a 1.5 period 10 years ago. I had to stop due to family considerations and budget, and spent the last 10 years looking at the sky and aching to be back up there. Literally aching - I would be outside on a perfect day, look at the sky and judge the wind and feel pangs of regret that I wasn't up there.

In October, I went to Skydive Houston and started over again. I made AFF 1-7 and my first though leaving the plane was "F*ck, I've missed this!!!!!!!!" I was hooked all over again, and this time I'm not quitting until I physically CANT jump anymore.

Get back into it - give yourself a chance to work through the feelings of anxiety and just relax and be "in the moment". I feel pretty certain it'll all come back to you.

Best of luck!
Mike

I started jumping in 91, on rounds, loved it and made 30+ jumps, then had a lazyiness/work commitments layoff till 94, when I made another 30+ jumps. Work/relationship kinda put that on hold.

Made a couple in 2000. Not much fun. I couldn't get in the swing of it.

Started again back in August 04.

Its the best thing I've ever done. This time I bought my own rig almost immediately, to ensure I had no excuse for not jumping, i've made 70+ jumps in the past few months and each day I am thankful I had the oppertunity to start skydiving again.

Everyday is a school day now, and its the most fun you can have clothed. (well almost).;)

This time, I WILL NOT let this wonderful sport/expierence slip away.

Thanks alot guys... I'm so glad to hear how it is to get
"back in the saddle", and knowing that the feeling
sort of stays where you left it. I can't wait to go back and
this time it will be an uninhibited experience. But for now,
Im going underground... but trust, when I come back...
the sky will be lit the f*ck up with some extraordinary
tekneeq (technique for yall who don't speak "da language") anyway everybody, have fun up there...
and thanks for the helping hand...

Nine years in, then nine years out. I wasn't actually going to get back in, but someone at work knew I was a former skydiver and asked me to be the point man for a group of fellow workers who wanted to learn *team-building.*

Contacted my old JM who now owned the DZ, showed up with the group, was offered the opportunity to make a jump and declined, asked again and said OK. Refresher was about five minutes and got on the plane to 5k for a Hop-n-Pop.

Landed on the "X" and said, "I'm back." Ordered gear the next week.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
