Nonetheless, Brutus the skydiving dachshund and his owner plunged from a plane flying at 6,000 feet Sunday and parachuted before spectators at an air show at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Pet owner Ron Sirull said Brutus gets a kick out of freefall and he "wouldn't do anything to hurt" his diving partner. The 4-year-old dog wears custom-made goggles and makes the jump tucked in a pouch fastened to Sirull's chest. Brutus has logged 100 jumps since his first dive at age 1. His owner said a veterinarian and the Arizona Humane Society have signed off on the activity as being safe.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Animal rights activists had condemned Saturday's jump as cruel and exploitative. But Ron Sirull, the dog's owner and diving partner, said Brutus gets a kick out of freefall -- or "fleafall" as he calls it. "I love Brutus. I wouldn't do anything to hurt him," Sirull said. "It turns him on." Brutus makes the jumps tucked into a pouch fastened to Sirull's chest. Sirull says the 4-year-old dog has logged 100 jumps since his first dive at age 1. Sirull said his dog's veterinarian and the Arizona Humane Society have signed off on the activity as being safe. "The part he hates the most is the sound of the plane taking off," said Sirull. "I cup his ears." quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

quade 3 #4 November 4, 2002 http://www.bayarea.com/mld/bayarea/news/weird_news/4396819.htm Quote Animal lovers howl about skydiving dog The Associated Press VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Animal lovers are howling over a skydiving dog. The parachuting Dachshund -- known as Brutus the Skydiving Dog -- is scheduled to perform at this weekend's Air and Space Show at Vandenberg Air Force Base. ``What we feel is this is cruelty to animals,'' said Shirley Cram, shelter director and treasurer for the Volunteers for Inter-valley Animals. ``It's exploiting the dog. It certainly isn't fun for that dog to jump out of that plane.'' Brutus' skydiving partner disagrees. ``He gets all excited when I'm getting my gear ready,'' said Ron Sirull of Delray Beach, Fla., contending Brutus enjoys his aerial activities. He added, ``He's totally up for it.'' Sirull said his dog's veterinarian and the Arizona Humane Society have signed off the activity being safe for man's best friend. ``There's always a misconception that Brutus jumps by himself,'' said Sirull, adding the dog is tucked into a special pouch affixed to his owner's chest. Brutus also dons custom-made goggles for what Sirull calls his ``fleafall.'' While Sirull has 1,000 jumps, Brutus has logged 100. ``That's equal to 700 jumps in dog years,'' his owner joked. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
