hmatousek 0 #1 February 6, 2007 Wanted to clear up a rumor about a fatality that did not happen at Skydive Ixtapa. I work manifest at Skydive Ixtapa and last Monday we had a tandem cut away. A local reporter assummed it was a fatality and put it in the local paper. Our DZO is trying to correct the rumor and the reporter is writing a public apology. We have been told that the news went state side and we would like your help clearing it up. To let everyone know the instructor and student landed safely in the landing area after the cut away. Please if you hear of this, let the truth be told. Everyone is okay, well except maybe the wound that has been given to our dz. Thanks! MrBrant 0 #2 February 6, 2007 wow! We've had wuffos call 911 after seeing a cutaway and assuming a fatality - but to actually print that in a newspaper???? way to go dumbass! A simple "what was that" to the jumper standing next to him would have cleared that up immediatly! oh - edited to add: Enjoy the free publicity! hmatousek 0 #4 February 6, 2007 Our dz is mainly a tandem operation because it is located in a tourist town in Mexico. There are not many jumpers around unless you come to Carlos and Charlies. We land on a public beach, which is absolutely beautiful, but in view of the public all the time. We are in the middle of our boogie right now and have about 50 fun jumpers down here now. Fun jumpers are welcome all the time however, but things are really fun right now!Life doesn't have to be perfect in order to be beautiful!

Perhaps the reporter wasn't there, was just writing a story based on what they were told by others. One might conclude that a fatality is of such little consequence that they didn't even bother to confirm it.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

DrewGPM 0 #9 February 7, 2007 Chicagoland isn't in Ixtapa, they are in Puerto Escondido. the DZ in Ixtapa used to be run by Skydive Chicago, but now it run but an Ixtapa local. The SDC staff helps out in the winter and some of the SDC jumpers head down there for the boogie.
tigra 0 #10 February 8, 2007 After I read this, I had to go check the Zihua board I used to visit regularly. I see someone posted an explanation there as well. Very good move! Its amazing how some rumors get started, but they spread like wild fire on those message boards! A couple of years ago, I was having a discussion with a regular there who was absolutely convinced there had been a tandem (double) fatality there the year before. I had the hardest time convincing him that it didn't happen and that skydiving fatalities, especially tandem fatalities don't get covered up or go unreported. He, and other people on the board took the position that if it was really bad for tourism, the local government would just cover it up and that's why I didn't know about it. And I tried to explain that I personally knew most of the people working there at the time, and even if I didn't, the way the skydiving community works, it would be virtually impossible not to hear about something like that! After arguing back and forth on the board, he finally sent me an email explaining that he wasn't a gossip monger and he wasn't trying to trash anyone's business, but he heard what he heard from what he considered to be a very reliable source. Oddly enough, the "source" turned out to be a man he met at an AA meeting over there- an American who claimed to be one of the tandem instructors who had clearly fallen "off the wagon" and was using his grief over a non-existent accident as his excuse! Go figure! I guess he was really convincing, because it took an awful lot for me to get the message board guy to admit that maybe, just maybe, he had been lied to!
