Anyone else like hop n pops?

There is something very appealing about doing a hop n pop on a load full of altitude goers. Instead of being one of the crowd you alost feel like the ride is especially for you.

Gainer out the door and toss the PC or simply clear and pull as you watch the plane fly away with a familiar head looking out the door at ya before it retracts and goes on its way. Ahh bliss.

you took the words right out of my mouth, I think that's why I found it to be so appealing B|

however I'm sure eventually when I have to do one because of an emergency I won't be as thrilled about the idea :S

You mean like when we used to do 4 ways out of a 182 @ 5K and turn points?

Well that wouldn't exactly be a hop-n-pop then would it? :)

i never knew you could get out that low, the lowest hop n pop i have done is 4k. maybe the rules are different here in the uk.

I've been out at less than half that altitude in the UK;)
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

So it seems there may be a difference in what the rules say and what you can get away with :D.
Many years before I started there was a DZO that got out at 400 feet, he said if he knew then, what he knows now, he wouldn't have done it. He also won't tell us what the lowest altitude he got out is. He just says,"You gotta remember we were landing in the ocean."

I love canopy flight. Its my favorite aspect of skydiving, outside of getting to teach students. Getting to teach low time jumpers about canopy flight is the best.

All of that centers around hop-n-pops for me. Hop-n-pops 3k-5k or at altitude for some focused canopy work.

:o Not with my snively spectre!
Just out of interest, what is the legal exit altitude? I would of thought at least 1000ft above legal opening altitude or am i wrong?

As far as I can make out, here in the US, there's no legal exit altitude so long as you don't bust your container opening altitude.

I used to hate hop n pops! Untill one day at the DZ with a low cloud cover 2,000 - 2,200 ft :o. I did not like the idea, but i wanted to jump so bad that day (as I do all other days;)). The clouds didnt clear by 10-11 am so the other jumpers decided to manifest for a 20 min call:S. The pilot and other jumpers talked me into going. I figured the worste would be that i had to ride the plane down if i was to scared:D:D. We ended up doing maybe 6-8 jumps at 2k to 2.2k. It was one of the best days i ever had jumping!!!!!!!!

About 4-5 pm the clouds cleared enought for 1 full alt. jump! It was a great day! I love H&P now! It was good to get the low exits out of the way just in case! BTW anyone out there that dosent like the idea. It really is not that bad. You are moving so slow vertically at first you have plenty of time!;)

Nothing opens like a Deere!

You ignorant fool! Checks are for workers!

I wouldn't know what the rules are in the UK, but even here in the States, most people seem to interpret a hop & pop as a 5 - 10 second delay from 4 to 5 grand.

Back in the day when pairchutes wuz carved out'n wood, we'd uset ter get out anywhweres from 2 to 3 grand and anything longer than a 3 second delay was considered a 5 second delay and not a hop & pop. The h&p's I've done since returning 6 years ago have all been from at least 4 grand, but I'd be okay down to 2 grand with my Pilot canopy and not worry about my Cypres firing.

Being a small single 182 DZ with no tandems, there's basically an AFF on every load RIGHT next to the door.

Open at 3.5k, cold air rushing in, quickly step out facing the prop, give the finger/flip the bird to the plane then do a backflip and catch the face of the student after the first revolution.

Evil but oh soo fun.

Subterminal flying is an absolute blast.

PS: I had a 400 jump wingsuit/tracker specialist on a hop n pop backtrack (with finger flip/bird) on my AFF1, probably the most spine chilling experience ever. Cold air + the face to face glare, A++.

Love 'em. Exit altitude anywhere from 2200 to 13000 .. great opportunity to do some recreational CRW as well. :)
From 5000 I actually prefer freefalling (tracking, wingsuiting or RW) though. :P

Have done H&P from 3000 without bothering to take off the wingsuit, have done freefall wingsuit jumps from 3500 where you fly around the person exiting after you while he's opening out the door. :o

But know your gear. Some canopies, and bungee pilots, do take time to open. I've been looking at a bungee pilot in tow for 8 seconds after a H&P.

Johan.
I am. I think.

I'd consider a real hop'n'pop to be deploying while still in sub-terminal. Otherwise it doesn't qualify. Hence the names: Hop 'n' pop, clear & pull, and jump & dump.

I tried a 3-way from 2700 when i had just touched over 100 jumps. Didn't last long before i poo'd me y-fronts and tracked off. But at least we got it off the hill staying together.

On the ground one of the chaps came up to me and says "nice short track, where you trying to hand me your pilot chute?" :D

What's cool is when you have a good otter load of people doing hop and pops. It is cool to open up and then watch everyone else just jump and dump one right after another

Is that because that's all a 182 can get up to with a load of anvils?

My DZO says they used to only go to 7,500 and turn just as many points as we do from 9,000, then I asked when they opened...
