padu 0 #1 February 16, 2009 I don't know if it's from last week or the week before since I DVR'rd it and only watched it yesterday... but somewhere in the plot, the suspect, the adrenaline junkie, works at Skydive Perris... When the two police inspectors say "we have to pay this guy a visit", I thought there would be some skydiving action. When they get to "Perris", it is only a generic hangar at some airport. They arrive at the exact time when the suspect is going to suicide from jumping the airplane. The inspectors came to this conclusion because when searching through his stuff, they found the main canopy in his duffel bag (wtf!?!?).... They run after the guy, and he is on the runway bound to board the airplane.. with an empty rig... no reserve and no main... how stupid is that? I understand that 90% of the population won't even pay attention to that... but it would be sooooo easy to plot something a little bit more convincing, and without spending more on production... just call someone that actually skydives! blaUna volta che avrete imparato a Volare, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo perchè è là che siete stati ed è là che vorrete tornare. linestretch 0 #2 February 16, 2009 Too funny, I saw it too. Made me laugh. You could see a control tower in the background that obviously not in Perris. Also, the rig the guy was wearing....no main, an old vector.....typical. And how they looked on the board to see that he was practicing for pulling lower and lower....from like 8k to 5k.my pics & stuff!
padu 0 #3 February 16, 2009 Hahaha! I forgot about that! Such a nonsense! AND... the assumption is that a skydiving school or DZ would log each and every jump, including deployment altitude.... padu 0 #6 February 16, 2009 That reminds me of another stupidity (incurring the risk of hijacking my own thread)... I like to shoot handguns, but I don't want the burden of owning one, so I go to the range and rent one... It happens that if you are renting a gun, you can only use the range if you have a buddy with you... they said it's less likely you will rent the gun to commit suicide if you have someone in the lane with you... go figure... There are almost infinite ways to commit suicide...Una volta che avrete imparato a Volare, camminerete sulla terra guardando il cielo perchè è là che siete stati ed è là che vorrete tornare. padu 0 #8 February 17, 2009 The ones here in San Diego only let whoever if whoever owns a gun. I just must have went to a wild one then cuz it was my 1st time i had no buddy. Dude said "you familar with a gun"? I said "nope" he said "heres how you load it" and that was that. rgaray 0 #12 February 17, 2009 Padu, yeah, they had to shoot that episode at the Hawthorne airport which is within the 30 mile zone inside LA county. Union rules state that if a production needs to be moved outside of a certain range, shit starts to get exponentially expensive. I know the guy that consulted them for this episode, and he too, wasn't happy either with the end result. But like you said, most people that watch the episode have absolutely no clue about dz operations, let alone rigs etc... it's TV too, it would have been so much worse if they would have made it like this for a feature film.--- "It takes courage to walk through the rain on a cold and foggy night, but it is those nights that dawn the most beautiful mornings." We did some actual filming at Perris for the Honda commercial, and on the day the first unit was there, it took 12 guys to do _anything_ - and often they had to be fetched from LA. That's strange This isn't driven by law, but by personal experience. The ranges that have enough of these suicides implement them. It comes down to 'bring a gun or a friend if you want to rent one.' Definitely one of the more self centered methods of suicide. I could see someone pulling their main out, since saying you won't pull probably won't succeed when you have so much time to reconsider. quade 4 #15 February 17, 2009 QuoteI could see someone pulling their main out, since saying you won't pull probably won't succeed when you have so much time to reconsider. You'd have to pull out both the main and reserve and while it's possible I doubt most places (especially Perris) are going to let you get on the plane without somebody noticing that. It's FAR easier just to not deploy.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
