miranda09 0 #1 December 2, 2009 and I am starting to wonder why I started this time of year . I wanted to ask my instructors 2 weeks ago when I was at the dropzone what is best to wear to keep warm in the winter but I forgot. What do you guys suggest for a student? Is there anything better than the traditional long underwear?
billvon 2,685 #2 December 2, 2009 >What do you guys suggest for a student? Thermal underwear. REI sells some good stuff. I've generally gotten the thinnest layers they sell, and under a jumpsuit it keeps me warm even when it's -30F out. (Keep in mind you're only in freefall for a minute, and under canopy for 5.) Gloves. Your instructors will give you advice on what gloves to wear. Generally when temps are under 40, the loss of sensation you get with thin gloves is less of a problem than the loss of sensation from your hands being numb. They'll probably have gloves you can use. Moving. It's supposed to be 65F at Perris this weekend . . .

FreeFlyer2100 0 #4 December 2, 2009 The best way to stay warm at the DZ during the winter is to hook up with a seasoned jumper. They can spend many hours helping you stay warm, a hottie like you I don't think it will take long

FreeFlyer2100 0 #6 December 2, 2009 You see, with that quick wit you will have no problem at all finding your "heater" Try to find Katie and Connor at your DZ, they are a lot of fun and can help show you around. They are even AFF instructors so you may have already jumped with them.

wolfriverjoe 1,452 #10 December 2, 2009 Longies, warm socks, lined jeans, flannel or fleece shirt/sweatshirt (avoid hooded ones), a balaclava to keep your neck warm, and gloves. As a student, you can add layers and put on a slightly larger jumpsuit. Some of us have to have a 2nd suit that's a little bigger for use with winter clothes. Make sure you have your instructors approve your gloves!! If they are too bulky, you may have problems at pull time. Some people wear thin cloth gloves with latex surgical gloves underneath. The latex blocks the wind, which is your biggest enemy. Keep in mind that you are in freefall for less than a minute. Even with temps at altitude dropping well below zero (-20 isn't uncommon this time of year) I never feel the cold until after I open. I'm too focused on the jump. I go "Oh shit, that's cold" when the door opens, but when the cut is called, nothing matters but the jump."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Hi M Your over 18 yo and you don't know how to keep warm in the winter Let me guess your just a poor helpless little innocent girl that needs lots of attention. If you can't remember to ask your intructors what to wear how are you going to remember what to do when your prachute has a malfunction and you have to go to plan B. The dogs at the DZ will give you all the attention that you can handle until you either run out of $$$ or make a dumb mistake because the dogs put you on the fast track brfore your ready for it and hurt yourself really bad. Read the waiver its real. You get hurt you won't be able to sue anyone for even a cup of coffee. Read the incident forumThese are real incidents are you ready to die, lose a foot or walk with a permanet limp and be in constant pain. I suggest you introduce yourself to the women forum on this site and ask them how a sweet young thing should act/wear when your around the DZ.One Jump Wonder

Andy0689 0 #17 December 3, 2009 I started at the same time last year in December. I think it was best because I was usually the only AFF student and never had to wait on instructors. +1 to layering under your jumpsuit. Your exposure is pretty minimal. Look at REI for a pair of windproof gloves. I had a pair of Manzella silkweights that I swear by. Warm enough and you don't lose too much sensation in being able to find your handles.Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

Tiger6513 0 #21 December 3, 2009 Your jumping in VA? My girl and I did our first jump class with Jim Crouch and jumped at West Point. Awesome spot! Now we jump in Delaware, that is till they close then its back to West Point. Just layer thin clothes, under armour is great but chillies and several others also work. Get gloves (search forums here for advice). Not a bad idea to have a face mask ( like used for skiing snomobileing)Travis Roy Foundation.
