cutaway / to reserve rides survey

Recommended Posts

prompted by vertiflys' thread......

Every cutaway should usually be followed by a reserve ride.....sometimes due to a ripcord pull, sometimes due to an RSL,
sometimes due to an AAD...

But not every reserve ride , is preceeded by a cutaway.....:o...;).. right???

So.!!?? how many cutaways???? as compared to how many reserve rides...???
could be an interesting set of statistics...

i'll begin...
3176 jumps,
2 cutaways But, a total of 6 reserve rides.:o

others??? please carry the 'cutaway' and 'reserve rides' numbers forward...

i'm thinking that there could be as few as 50 cutaways,,,, to every 100 reserve activations...
let's see.

.... 2 ... and 6.......

one true cutaway, and three AAD fires (first was an FXC12000 fire that I rode both canopies down after) and the latter two were cypres fires that I then cut my main away immediately. :$

I use to test jump new Phantom reserves, won't count those as it was intentional and packed in the main tray. ;)

3660 jumps

14 cutaways / 14 reserve rides

2 / 6 + 14 / 14 = 16 / 20

16 / 20

Sorry, didn't want to the other guys math...so I'm adding to this one.

5600 jumps..
8 chops/9 rides

24 / 29
my pics & stuff!

44 cutaways

57 reserve rides....

hmm...

only 13 reserve rides, without a previous cutaway..

such as totals, p.c.i.tows, loss of altitude awareness resulting in reserve pull,
AAD firings,
unintentional reserve deployments,( such as ; on exit, or during a skydive )

please carry these numbers along, adding to them,,,,
your details. thanks

Isn't "total" equal 'nothing out' (which suggests ripcord deploy = nowadays students only)?

I've had one, followed by cutaway after two out..
and another two clear cuts

By totals I mean the main pack was not open. In both cases I lost the ripcord handle. It was before the age of AAD’s and I was trying something I thought would be the next big thing. After twice I moved on to my next great idea.:P

carrying forward the numbers...

...................................cutaways..........reserve rides

balance forward ...................44...........57

TaylorC....6......7
brucet7.......1...1
format........2...3
outski....0.....1
piisfish......2....4
timmyfitz....9....9

totals..
so far....64 cutaways and 82 reserve rides.
give or take ( for bad arithmetic, or poor data interpretation...)

i notice that cutaways are well above 50 and reserve rides are well under 100...
.. might have to post this in the trivia and history forum... to get allll the "straight to reserve" scenarios, lost handles, and low pulls, which would have resulted in a reserve pull, but no chop...:|, in order to get to a 50 to 100 ratio...:P;)

could be current gear,, the last 25 years or so, has streamlined procedures, and lessened "pull problems" , near the ends of our skydives.
and most mals, now , at least have the main, being deployed, only not completely,,
hence the cutaway numbers catch up.

carry on.:)

I quit counting after 20 reserve rides
2 tandem terminal reserve deployments
all the rest were after cutting away from torn or tangled or spinning mains

cutaway from two badly spinning solo canopies.

Landed one biplane after I was stupid enough to spiral a student main canopy hard enough to scare an FXC 12000

OK, trying to intepret riggerrob's dangerous past... and add my numbers:

Total (with RR numbers): 67 / 102
New total (1800 jumps, 1 cutaway and reserve ride): 68 / 103

To clarify why I quit counting after 20 reserve rides ...
Back when I was young and handsome ...
... er ... young and foolish ...
I did some test-jumping for the Canadian Army and suffered my second malfunction ( a total inversion on round a Military Freefall canopy).
Since I did not learn my lesson, I continued test-jumping and suffered two more malfunctions while test-jumping for the West German Army.

But the bulk of my reserve rides were after tearing or tangling first-generation tandem canopies in the Southern California desert.
How I escaped fractures is a complete mystery to me????

Nowadays, if you asked me to jump most of that gear (eg. first-generation tandems from any manufacturer), my reply would be:"The museum is over there."
