Jump / Cutaway Ratio Poll

Note: Peter if you aren't counting CRW wraps you should not count CRW jumps.

I see what you mean. I was thinking of the thread purely in terms of "how often does one's main canopy fail when it is deployed from the pack".

This is opposed to the more inclusive definition adding in failures from CRW or canopy wraps or times one chopped after a two-out whether due to a faulty RSL or a low pull, but probably not including intentional cutaways nor cutaways that are done in response to a total so that the rings are cut away but the main canopy is still in the container, and maybe or maybe not including a cutaway where someone accidentally pulled the handle in freefall.

There are a lot of special cases which may or may not be implied.

So someone can throw in my one CRW chop if they prefer a different definition.

57811 + 650 = 58461
110 + 2 = 112
58461/112 = 521.97

1 in 522

I'm impressed it's gotten this far with a bunch of skydivers doing math and someone hasn't f'ed it up real bad yet!

First of all, congrats for 5800+ with no cutaways ! My good friend Joe Wasser has 4000+ with no cutaways and he's the best I know personally. You and Joe are doing something right. I want to add a disclaimer to my numbers here - I had 3 cutaways 1974 - '80, with older gear and a young & stupid attitude. Since returning in 2003, I've had one cutaway
in 446 jumps, after blowing up my main with a slammer opening on modern gear and a much wiser old fart's attitude.

59,161 + 1012 = 60,173
112 + 4 = 116
60,173/116=510.54

Still not the advertised "one in a thousand", but two in a thousand is not at all unusual with most people I know.

I think that anything falling under the "jump" then "cutaway" category should count.

That's jump out the door of an airplane that is flying, to....

(backflip), or (crew), or (mr.bill), or (freefly), or (4-way), or (tandem), or ...., (etc.). Otherwise, not everyone could participate. This should probably be an overall ratio in the end. Everyone always hypothesized the "every 300 jumps or so" people have a cutaway. It looks like that number may be a memory. We're ranging about 500 so far. B|

5800 jumps, 6 cutaways (but 3 don't count because they were tandems)

WTF? Of course they count. 7 of my 10 were tandems.

None of my 12 reserve rides were tandems. Oh, thats right, I am not a tandem mastere.:P

First adding billvon's numbers:

60,817+5,800 = 66,617
120+6 = 126

66,617/126 = 528.71

Then adding my own:

66,617+130 = 66,747
126+1 = 127

66,747/127 = 525.57

Adding in my jumps:

67,217 + 2,500 = 69,717

127 + 6 = 133

69,717 / 133 = 524.2

Adding in Mrs. Azureriders jumps:

69,717 + 496 = 70,213

133 + 0 = 133

70,213 / 133 = 527.9

So Mitch (DontPanic), it looks like you and Red (Mrs. Azureriders) should expect a fun ride within the next fifty or so jumps........B|

Step 1. Add (Your total jump number) to the ("Total Jumps) in the post immediately before you.

Step 2. Add (Your total cutaways) to the (Total Cutaways) in the post immediately before you.

Step 3. Divide the two for the current average and write the current average

Step 4. Help keep it going...

70,213 + 8,000 = 78,213

133 + 32 = 165

78,213 / 165 = 474

- Zero malfunctions on 28' flat canopies.
- Zero reserve malfunctions.

80,313 + 3,541 = 83,854

176 + 5 = 181

83,854 / 181 = 463.28

if my buddy Steve were to post his jumps, the average would go back up to compensate for Pat, he has about 10,000 jumps with no malfunctions
