Jump Calculator

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a jump calc that will approximate total flight time. Required inputs are plane exit height, body mass, chute opening height, and the plane’s air speed. Wind speed, and chute type would be nice but not required. Assumptions can be made for dive position, and geographic altitude.

If any knows of a calc that already does this, please post the link.

If you can code something quick, that would be awesome as well. Not looking for a shiny product, just something that will approximate the total time in the air.

Thanks,

Rob

Here's the equation:

Total Time = (# jumps x 55s) + (# jumps x 240s).

It will generate the answer to within .002 seconds. Is that enough accuracy?

Just kidding of course. There's really too many variables to come up with anything useful. What do you need it for? Jumper mass, wind speed, and aircraft airspeed aren't really needed. Body position (jump type) on the other hand would be critical unless the jumper only likes to do one thing. And same with canopy type, unless the jumper always uses the same canopy.

Rule of thumb calculation:

Freefall time: 12 seconds for the first 1,000 feet, then 6 seconds per 1,000' thereafter (belly flying).

Canopy time: 1 minute per 1,000 feet (if you're not spiraling).

The plane’s air speed, and the wind speed are irrelevant.

Thanks for the input guys.

The reason I wanted soem type of general formula or app was me and a couple of guys got talking about how long we were in flight. I know there were a lot of variables, and some jumps seemed to take forever, while some just seconds.

Thanks again.
