Self Induced Malfunction (video)

Recommended Posts

I am not really sure where to post this.

I did a 14,000 ft High pull a few weeks back and at about 5000 ft I put myself into line twists that I could not get out of and cut away at 2500 ft.

It is interesting if not entertaining. The trouble itself starts at 2:37 if you do not want to watch the whole thing. I did not edit it so turn down the sound if you do not want to hear the wind.

I welcome any feedback.

Enjoy!

Choose your poison to give us a psychological insight.
a. "I knew the gun was loaded, but I didnt think it would kill".
b. Why did you not try it up higher?
c. Was it time for a repack anyway? Was that your motivation?
d. It seems that the canopy did exactly what you told it to do.
Take care,

Great POV video of a cutaway sequence.

That being said, and taking off from Sparky's post, here's a video of an almost identical self-induced linetwist-to-cutaway sequence - except this one happened much lower. Had this jumper not had an RSL (in this case, a Skyhook), he might not have survived.

Any reason you don’t use an RSL? You took about 3.5 seconds to pull your reserve.

Sparky

I guess the simple answer is I like the control.

I have had 3 malfunctions like this one (the others were not self induced) and on the first one I cut away and deployed the reserve while still on my back and the pilot chute and free bag hit me in the back of the head. Now, if I have the time, I wait until belly to earth to fire the reserve. In this situation I knew I had the time so I took it to get back to my belly.

Feed back eh?

Doing helicopters on a Velo is rather difficult. Borrow a VX and you'll have much better luck. I jump a Velo.

I talked to TJ last night about this. He's very good at doing helicopters and he said he's never been able to sort it out consistantly on a Velo. There's more to it but we didn't have time to discuss the reasons.

He did it for Fun???

It's a move that can be duplicated consistantly on other canopies including some crossbraced canopies.

It did do what he told it to, even though he didn't exactly mean all of it :)

Seem to be a lot of haters here.
I don't know if you are an idiot or not, but you seem like you like to have fun under (or over:P) a glider up high, so you have my respect. I fly an all sail JVX 79, never taken more than 6 seconds delay on it and never less than 10k. I do not swoop.

You should get into acro paragliding if you are not already. WAY more fun, dangerous, and time consuming than skydiving.

I could do this fairly easily on my 111 XFX but I can not seem to pull it off consistently on the 90 velo. I did not think the platform would have that much effect on the heli flight.

really? you didnt seem to have much control on this jump.

Oh you... I see what you did there. You are a clever one.

How about "I like control over the timing of the reserve opening."

I do love flying my canopy. But I love swooping too. Why would I give up swooping if I can have both?

(watch the whole thing through the landing swoop)
This is Pal T on a 12.5m thriller. (the paragliding equivelent of Luigi landing the 39)

Edit to add : Pal does not get started acro for a bit,, so unless you want to watch two minutes of a bad ass in an afro pretending to be on a radio talk show, skip to 2:00:$
