What reserve type?

Recommended Posts

from the manufacturer~;)

The reserve steerable system, type PZ-81 is intended for use with sports- and training parachute systems.

The system is quickly mounted and disassembled on the main canopy harness.

Its location in front of the parachutist allows activating the system by any hand trough pulling out the manual release ripcord and performing visual inspection.

The system is deployed only manually. It works safely at a completely detached main canopy.

The system consists of a steerable canopy with an area of 27 m2, wing platform is shaped like two triangles joined together among one lateral side.

Application range:

Dropping out height - 150 - 2000 m,
Dropping out speed - 140 - 225 km/h.
Vertical descent speed: 5,62 m/s at an all-up weight of 100 kg, descent level speed component– 6,12 m/s.
Time of a turn on 360º: up to 5 sec.

Specified life:
ten applications in case of any abnormal work of the main canopy or unlimited quantity of applications - after main canopy deployment.

Service life - 12 years.
Weight – no more than 4,3 kg.
Dimensions of a system packed into container, no more than:
length - 0,42 m,
width - 0,21 m,
height - 0,2 m.

To add one more thing, the manufacturer's quote that Twardo dug up refers to using it as a belly mount. It was also available as part of piggyback rigs.

The impression I've gotten is that it seems to be well regarded in Eastern Europe. Very old fashioned now, but remembered fondly for being a reliable canopy for saving your ass.

It is a Rogallo wing. I have a Rogallo type paraglider rescue rogallo. They are considered (in both paragliding as well as skydiving) as less than reliable, therefor acro pilots also carry a round rescue parachute. (yes, two reserves to use in case of an acro PG emergency, the steerable rogallo if you have the altitude to deal with it, the round if you are low and in the shit).

Pic is of me jumping the older rogallo rescue from a plane. The rescue is called the Beamer. This one built in 2008. I think it is 38m. The new one is white and weighs almost half as much as the yellow/red beamer.

Of course that looks like a Paradactyl (may they rest in peace) which was once TSO'd as a reserve, if I remember correctly. I never jumped one. Did you?

The Scaradactyl...yeah I have a few jump one one.

Heck it opened better than my T-Bow...barely! ;)

A DZO friend had a paradactyl. As I recall he was compelled to start doing his own reserve repacks because it had opening 'issues'... a lot. If I remember right it didn't really flare and landings were "sporty" on no-wind days.
Fun to watch tho, I recall it motored around pretty well.

Found this thread with some more great information. And Airtwardo’s red/white PZ-81.

http://www.dropzone.com/forum/Skydiving_C1/Skydiving_History_%26_Trivia_F21/PZ-81_Parawing_P3254543

Based on PCChapman’s and Calvin19’s comments and the Mi-8 jumpship this is probably a recent eastern European video. So the PZ-81 is still in use, true?

Thanks. A rigger friend of mine spoke of seeing a "double dactyl rig" back when the Stratoflyer was the small packing canopy. He said it was super tiny (but nothing compared to what we have today.) B|

Figured I might as well upload the video of my first jump on my PZ-81 a couple years back:
http://youtu.be/oBUayyTdPoI

The short video includes the deployment -- without a bag, it is messy, and the opening was snappy even for a low speed hop and pop. (But perhaps the pilot chute controlled reefing works better at higher speed, who knows.)

(And for a little carnage, there's the classic mid air collision video where a guy with a PZ-81 spirals into Beatnik under his Delta II. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8wET-7GmHc)

Why would anyone, just for fun, jump one of these things ? Good response to the wrap though, quick cut-away by the first guy, and the second guy did finally cut-away.

Life is short ... jump often.

Good response to an entanglement. It was not a wrap.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Are you seriously asking that question?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, why would you jump one knowing you will likely get a hard opening, and landing it will probably involve a good PLF. It might be fun to fly while it's airbourne. Maybe a good water landing with a floatation device would be the way to go.....Summer jumps only.....:|.....We have modern canopies that fly and land well...use them.

Life is short ... jump often.
