None........500 ft to the ground....feet locked together....who will let go first....now at 250 ft......I hope you let go................is that in the new guy's mind ? If that is what you think is safe......good luck mate.

this comment illustrates that not only have you not done a down-plane, you dont actually know ANYTHING about how they are done.
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

You're right, I haven't, and I don't. Good luck anyway. I personally like to do the scary stuff
up high (higher than 500' anyway) I'll just mind my own business for now.

Downplanes do look scary and dangerous, but that is why they are spectacular, and they are most "effective" when done low down.

You can bet your boots that the mentor knew exactly what he was doing here, and was fully in control. So the safety factor would be much higher than it appears to be to you. It is definitely not "out of control and therefore extremely dangerous".

It is quite difficult to hold a downplane because of the forces involved. Note how the canopies fly apart on release. It takes a lot of strength to hold them together.

And no one wants to hold one into the ground. That would be silly.

I do agree that 39 jumps is a little on the low side though, for doing a DP.

Deathplanes.....now they are scary....especially if you are the one facing heaven....

Awesome. I love it.

Yup. All went well - which means they're awesome.
But if it hadn't.. we'd be saying something else entirely in the 'incidents forum' - especially if it's really the guy's 39th jump.
:o

And if I'm raining on peoples parade anyway, look at the "mister Bill downplane" in the related videos...
Awesome... except I can spot a few things which do not seem like a very good idea to me.
:)

What makes you think it's the "guy's" 39th jump?

The 39 jump wonder could be a DZ Diva. The mentor could just be impressed by her mad skilz.

This MS Bill CRW jump is not a dude

Quit being a drama queen about this. Use all of your senses to watch the video. "I bet he is going to put him into the wind"

Jesus fucking christ, how dumb can you get?

/not referring to the people in the video either

Also:
1) the low jumper is released going into the wind
2) wide open landing area
3) with enough altitude to recover through pretty much the complete canopy flight cycle before touching down (ok fine, 7 seconds returning to full flight vs 10, if you want to debate - and I am sure you all will)

Best idea? Maybe not.
Done well? Yes.
Kid had fun? Obviously.

Go cry some more you big babies.

Could you please explain what you mean by deathplane? Thanks.

Deathplane was the name we gave it, and stuck to.

A normal downplane has both jumpers, and both canopies, facing the ground,

In a deathplane, one jumper, and his canopy are facing the opposite way, so he is looking at the sky. His canopy partially collapses, and it looks pretty ugly. for the guy who is on his back it is pretty scary, because you can't see whats going on.

Its quite easy to imagine you are soon gonna be dead....

There are several different ways to hold on for a down plane. We used to have one person lock legs around the other's torso. Worked pretty well, but one guy (Jay Stokes) got his cutaway handle pulled on breakoff. He got his reserve out but was pretty damn low. So . . . I love a good downplane. I've certainly done my share of them. As always, though, watch your handles.

Seen the same thing happen, but too low for a reserve deployment. The main disappeared at about 200 feet, and luckily they held on and landed together under one canopy in a shower of grass and dust, but got up, dusted themselves off, and headed for a bar for a couple of stiff whisky's.

Luckily it was all over pretty quickly, they had good grips, and were instantly on to what was happening....also lucky they had specialised CRW gear, and had done a lot of CRW jumps together....

A RSL or skyhook might have caused major problems....

Downplanes are a blast, but done that low are a bit on the scary side (especially to a 39 jump wonder). Done right, by experienced CRW pilots, they are very impressive.

The biggest problem I see here (as we're seeing in other discipines) is the copy cats that will see this and say, I can do that.

If you want to do a downplane low, find the best CRW coach you can. But be warned, CRW Dawgs are the crazyest Mother%&%IUG*s on the planet. ;)

Yeah, everyone watching had the same sort of thoughts..... the instant the canopy came off, there was quite a loud sound of F***!!! from the 50 or 60 of us watching.....

No one could believe how luck came right side up for once....

It was at a NZ nationals once, in Masterton, during practice and fun jumps...prolly about 1987 - 88 - 89, I can't remember exactly when....hence there was quite a large group of people who witnessed it...

They were always taken low....that was part of the buzz....and they used to be done lots....but then CRW was pretty popular back then and lots of people did it.

NZ had some pretty hot CRW workers back then...cleaned up quite a few medals at world meets, and invented a lot of the techniques and gear innovations....

The vast majority of serious crwdogs don't take downplanes that low. We lost two highly experienced crwdogs about 5 years back when they were doing a low downplane and had trouble releasing their grip. There have been other deaths and serious injuries also over the years from them - even two at Spaceland within the past year or so.

Low downplanes are like toggle whipping hook turns. You can get away with them for a while but one tiny thing goes wrong and it can kill you.

I would have no problem doing crw with someone with 39 jumps. I would do a downplane with them. But my downplane would be at 3-4 thousand feet Taking it low is basically a low pull contest.

Catfish has done a lot of extremely extremely low downplanes and low pulls over the years and is well known for it. I would never ever recommend him as a crw mentor however because of his recklessness with safety. There are a lot of experienced safe people in Texas who would not be taking people on downplanes ridiculously low. It's not safe and it's especially not safe fora beginner

I've got 3000 crw jumps and will do all sorts of crazy stuff up high - but I respect mother earth because it has stolen a lot of my friends - several of which were from low downplanes.

And, back then, none of us had retractable Pilot Chutes Some friends got thier PC's tangled while turning a side by side into a down plane low. Imagine trying to land your canopy with your Pilot Chute wrapped around your friends PC.

I survived a Low CRW mishap once, don't want to go there again. I like doing Down Planes. I find it's more fun doing them higher and working on flying them. Worst thing to happen in years was Fargo and Byron stealing by shoes. :P

It would be damned difficult to lock feet together and hold a downplane.

It isn't too difficult. I've done it many times, using the parabatics grip.

You can do lots of other neat stuff with the parabatics grip. Check out this short video of the Plaid Jackets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1VMUZw8W0A
