jennyx 0 #1 June 17, 2012 Hey! So I am planning to make my recurrency jump after almost 4 years. I'm feeling nervous but really excited to get back in the air! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to make a smooth transition back into skydiving?
NWFlyer 2 #2 June 17, 2012 Pick up the SIM and reread at least section 2, 4, 5, and 6.1 before you go back. Those will be a good refresher on all the basics. It's online and there's also a smartphone app version now (both iPhone and Android). http://www.uspa.org/SIM.aspx My general suggestion would be - don't rush. If your profile numbers are accurate, you didn't have a huge number of jumps before you took your break. Be prepared to break back into things slowly. In other words, if you do your recurrency jump and someone invites you on a 10-way for the next jump, it's probably not the best idea to say yes. It'll take you a while to regain the comfort and awareness in the air to be safe on jumps with more than one or two other people. GLIDEANGLE 1 #3 June 17, 2012 Add SIM 6.10 & 6.11 to your reading list. Take a canopy control course. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
NWFlyer 2 #4 June 17, 2012 QuoteAdd SIM 6.10 & 6.11 to your reading list. Durr, yes, of course. Forgot that the canopy stuff was buried so far down in section 6. popsjumper 2 #5 June 18, 2012 To highlight part of what NWFlyer said.... Review, in depth, ALL of your emergency procedures. Everything including how to pull handles, when to pull the handles, when and how to fix minor canopy problems. Know that stuff like the back of your hand. Drill yourself on altitude awareness. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. jennyx 0 #6 June 19, 2012 Thanks! Ive got my Sim dusted off and i'm reading thru everything you suggested, I have been putting my rig on and practicing my ep's and I talked to the dz about a good refresher course before the jump!
rehmwa 2 #7 June 19, 2012 Just listen to your instructor like you are new. Sometimes retrains are harder than just first jump students because the retrains 'know it all already'. Though boys tend to be worse than girls on this.....Open mind, open ears, and they'll take good care of you. The bonus for you is that you already know you've been fine before, you can listen and apply with less tension than a 1st timer. If you've been practicing like crazy, that's great, you don't need to bring it up more than once, your ground performance will let the instructor know how you're doing. patience ... jennyx 0 #8 June 21, 2012 Thanks! I am treating it like i'm a first time jumper. Going over the Sim has been a great refresher, but after 4 years and going to a new dz I plan on taking it really slow a learning as much as I can.
