DOOOOOOOOOOR (etiquette and safety)

Recommended Posts

Nice video from Skydive Spaceland (starring RoryJ) on door usage, door etiquette, door safety. This would be a nice tool for a lot of DZs with this type of roll-up door to show their newer jumpers (and refresh the "experienced" folk who "forget" some of this).

The video states that people with parachutes should remover their seat belts.

As per the USPA IRM, Spaceland uses the policy of "tandems students shall be restrained through the use of seat belts or attachment to the instructors harness at all times."

Spaceland does adhere to this policy and I encourage it as well, but who ever came up with the wording is a dork :)

I didn't see anything about what to do when the green light comes on.

Like NOT to shout "Green Light Green Light GO GO GO..." from the front of the plane.

Of course not; everyone is supposed to shout "DOOR" in unison, on a C major 7 harmony.
Skydiving is serious business

Notice that the JM correctly says to not open the door below 1,500'. The sign in the airplane says 1,000'.

The difference is important.

 when opening the door of an aircraft during flight and while in the activation zone (below 500 m or 1.640 ft), it should be verified if there are any Vigils on board set in Student Mode. Certain aircrafts can create a pressure spike that can activate a Vigil AAD when it’s set in Student Mode.

He's also a DZ rigger at Spaceland, and did my lines the last time they needed replacing. Good job.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Glad everyone likes the video. I got sick of watching noobz constantly almost break the door, figured everyone could benefit.

And it looks like we might have to have a convention and offer moustache rides for everyone not lucky enough to have a fuzzy tickler on the upper lip.

:D

Not again!

Thanks for the vid, I'll pass on the 'ride'.

pretty simple:

1 - don't open the door (or crack it enough for a pilot chute to accidentally slip under) until you're at an altitude comfy for a main deployment - regardless of what's printed on the back of the plane.

2 - If you bother to open it, then open it all the way. Again, if something sneaks out, you'd rather be pulled out an open door instead of forced through a mostly closed door

to the rest of us - shush! they can see the green light just fine
