wmw999 2,382 #2 October 30 Yep. I saw that this morning. It was fun while it lasted, and I really wish it were as vibrant as it once was. To me it was a much more democratic (in the sense of participation) format than FB, Reddit, or whatever else is out there. There’s an awful lot of good information here Wendy P.
dudeman17 323 #3 October 31 Any idea of when it will go offline? Any chance of someone buying it and keeping it going?

Fortunately we have a solution: I nominate you and I invite all posters here, and everyone on their ignored users lists, to publicly throw their support behind the next President of DZ.com, Wendy! lippy 898 #10 November 1 This site has been a go-to for me for over 20 years, it's sad but many thanks to HH for keeping it going as long as he did. I've learned a lot, met some amazing people, had some great times and once even arranged a 3-country beer run thanks to DZ.com... It makes me wonder how much is the decline here due to a decline in sport jumping in general vs there just being many more options for online communities these days?
wmw999 2,382 #11 November 1 I think it’s more the second, and somehow newer communities are forming elsewhere, because FB has fewer people (not just jumpers) too. Wendy P.

Ya' well guess what, your two free jumps are revoked if you can't fix this.

Wendy P. Negative. No one want's to pay. We all pay it continues. It is that simple.
BIGUN 1,236 #14 November 1 HH Thank you for so many years of being able to not only connect with my fellow skydivers, but to communicate with them in a group. I have developed new lifelong friendships from here. I wish you well in your future endeavors.
sangiro 21 #15 November 6 Hey Folks - if you can get 300 people to pay $10 per month, it stays. But I've learned over the years that even though there's no such thing as a free lunch, most people would rather go hungry. You're welcome to start a campaign though... dudeman17 323 #16 November 7 Hmmm... I wonder what the chances would be of getting Chuck Akers to get USPA to take over this site... and then leave it alone?

I get it that the boss wants out, fair enough. But playing the how much will you pay game for a minor website is a loser. Sangiro needs to come out with a number and be open to ad revenue discussions etc. I'm in the biz and I can tell you that the days of fancy urls to make money are done. dudeman17 323 #18 November 7 Well that's kind of the point. I don't see anyone buying the site as a business investment for the reasons you state. So maybe when it's about to just die, they could grab it on the cheap and just maintain it as a service to jumpers.
wmw999 2,382 #19 November 7 If they were to do that, it'd probably be just the topical forums, and it might just be in the form of an archive, kind of like the Basejumper.com archive. And as the information ages, it'd be less and less relevant. At least that's what I'd want if I were USPA... not the hassle of running it every month. Wendy P. Ad revenue would be up to a new owner for profit. The important part of the offer would be the active user metrics.
Divalent 120 #21 November 7 I doubt anyone would find if profitable to buy this place and coast on the earnings. IMO, it would take a lot of effort to revamp the place to slow the rate at which traffic here is declining. IMO, a big problem is that the number of forums is insane relative to the number of users, which balkanizes the interesting nuggets of information/discussion. Most forums haven't had a post in months, (and when they get one, it typically gets ignored). It's sad, but I think this place's era is long gone. Phil1111 1,142 #23 November 14 IMO we all have to start by supporting the general discussion forums by making contributions. By checking out the advertisements of those manufacturers and individuals that advertise . I intend of doing both.
BIGUN 1,236 #24 November 23 (edited) I've been thinking about this for awhile and it sounds like there's a timeline getting close. For those considering it; there are ~42K followers on the Dropzone.com facebook page. There is a way to automatically push a new post from a phpBB forum to a Facebook page. One needs to set up a custom integration using a PHP script that leverages the Facebook Graph API to post new forum topics to your Facebook page whenever a new post is created on the phpBB board. This would generate traffic (the FB hasn't been posted to in a long while). That _could_ increase ad revenue from both sites. IMO; if the goal is to preserve and amplify the existing dz.com site - strip out some of the noise (DB, SC, bonfire, etc.) so the site generates skydiving activity on both sites again. Unfortunately those are the only parts of it that currently have traffic - and traffic drives ad sales. The FB link is a good idea, but that will tend to generate income (if any) from the Facebook side, not the BB side.
