In his book he stated that he was grateful for having escaped "real combat" and for learning how to "live like an adult". Then he joined the MAGA cult. Too bad that learning what honor means escaped his service. (not just to you, Phil, but yours was the easiest post to reply to) Funny, I just saw his PAO from his Iraq deployment on CNN, talking to Brianna Keiler, the other day. Shawn Haney and I go way back to OCS, then were both Marine PAOs (the officers in charge of combat correspondents). She's a good egg, and a way better PAO than I ever cared to be. I agree with what she said -- combat correspondents are called that because they have to go out to the areas to get the information to write in their reports. Additionally, enlisted CCs were nearly as likely to accompany embedded media as the officers were, and were always packing. Another colleague of ours died on one such escort when she stepped on a hidden IED; definitely not a safe job. Not to mention, especially in Iraq, there really wasn't any "rear area." Yeah, definitely safer than others, but not a safe job. I'm not saying JD Vance is a standup guy -- I despise everything that guy says and stands for, especially his accusations toward Tim Walz's service. But I had to give the Marine PAO perspective on combat correspondents and at least defend his service. Yeah, it was easier than that of many other Marines, but he did his four years honorably, just as Tim Walz did his 24 years, just as I did my combined 32 years.

Well said. and a cheer for your 32 years. Be it Waltz or yourself decades of service are nothing to be dissed. Vance's conduct brings to mind General Flynn who launched and still runs the "Reawaken America" group. In May of 2023 Trump called into a radio talk show to speak to Flynn and Trump stated "we're going to bring you back". " Flynn suggested that Trump should seize voting machines and could order up the military in some states and rerun the election....A joint investigation by The Associated Press and the PBS series “Frontline” found that the ReAwaken tour serves as a traveling roadshow and recruiting tool for an ascendant Christian nationalist movement that’s wrapped itself in God, patriotism and politics and has grown in power and influence inside the Republican Party.. Flynn endorsed nearly 100 candidates ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, and continues to urge supporters to get involved in politics –- especially at the local level –- ahead of the 2024 elections." Flynn and Vance together in a Trump government is something to think about. Two yes men ready to use the military for any political purpose and the hell with the constitution. TriGirl 298 #79 August 16 Agreed! Very scary. Funny side-note -- Flynn has a brother who is still an Army flag officer. He's a really good guy, though. Just hope he doesn't have to put up with too much blowback from his power-hungry brother's activities and antics.

nigel99 288 #81 August 18 I’ve just watched Walz’s rally in Nebraska. I’d say he is probably the first politician I’ve really liked and who comes across as authentic. His clever little jabs to wind up Trump and gaslight him are gold, crowd sizes and McFlurry machines in particular. Key points that stood out for me, are the way he empowers individuals and makes it about family. How he showed respect for traditional republicans as people of values and integrity and separated them from Trump and Vance etc. Lastly and importantly taking head on the issue of Trump and his ilk having tried to overthrow an election and that are planning to do it again.

Just did myself. Absolutely agree with your every observation.
gowlerk 2,093 #83 September 5 Right wing media attempted to find dirt on The Coach through his Trumpy brother. In the end all the brother would give them was that young Tim tended to get car sick on long trips and no one wanted to sit beside him. https://newrepublic.com/post/185607/tim-walz-brother-facebook-posts-truth
