wmw999 2,384 #228 October 29 I read Bezos's editorial about why he did this. He said yeah, he absolutely screwed up on the timing. Yeah, no shit. That said, he also indicated that a. people (i.e. righties) are losing faith in the press b. no one is likely to change their vote based on who a newspaper endorses Those points are both probably accurate. Had he done this back in January, or last year, would this have caused such a hubbub? I still think he's an asshole, but it wasn't a really awful editorial. Wendy P. And his head of Blue Origin had a meeting with Trump later in the day. Bezos said it was a coincidence, that he didn't know the meeting was scheduled. Really? Is that how you keep up with the business you own, by not having any idea that they're meeting with a former president and presidential candidate? At least that meeting definitely should have been on his radar.

Someone, I don't remember who, said that was like the piano player in the bordello saying, 'I don't know what they do up there.' Someone, I don't remember who, said that was like the piano player in the bordello saying, 'I don't know what they do up there.' Jerry Baumchen There's been a major scandal in the UK over the last decade since the tabloid press were caught using all manner of illegal methods to break stories. Phone hacking, bribing police, stealing medical records, you name it. All the editors (including snivelling weasel Piers Morgan) avoided prosecution by claiming they never told anyone to do anything illegal and never checked on journalists' sources so couldn't possibly have known what was going on. Right - they tasked their employees with publishing the most secret details about the lives of politicians, celebrities and even crime victims and made it crystal clear that no-one would ever check how those details were obtained... so it's not their fault. A nod's as good as a wink to a blind man.

ryoder 1,590 #235 October 31 Scientific American: Why Election Polling Has Become Less Reliable Today technological changes—including caller ID, the rise of texting and the proliferation of spam messages—have led very few people to pick up the phone or answer unprompted text messages. Even the well-respected New York Times/Siena College poll gets around a 1 percent response rate, Bailey points out. In many ways, people who respond to polls are the odd ones out, and this self-selection can significantly bias the results in unknowable but profound ways. “The game’s over. Once you have a 1 percent response rate, you don’t have a random sample,” Bailey says. The article goes on to explain how the pollsters are using mathematical weighting based on voters characteristics to attempt to adjust the results. Frankly, if I were a pollster, I would be searching for a new career.

Is there a list of all the things Trump can’t do now he’s a felon? Like, he wouldn’t be allowed to get a job collecting the garbage at a school but he can be in charge of the department of education. He couldn't get a job as a janitor in a court house but he can be in charge of both the DoJ and the appointment of federal judges. And I bet 90% of his supporters would kick and scream against any attempt to allow other felons to find gainful employment after serving their time. Revealing my own bias, I'd suggest that cold hard numbers and the evidence of history — whilst not infallible — offer a more reliable steer than gut instinct or the latest trending topic. I say "revealing my own bias" because somebody like me — a career journalist with a public broadcaster — keeps reaching for facts and historical data when they're increasingly less and less useful for predicting political outcomes.”
