Hi Joe,

At this moment, I think she is a shoe-in to get it.

Be it Harris or Hillary Clinton you can trust republicans to identify a woman as incompetent, inexperienced, a moron, etc. Its like ringing the bell at Pavlov's feeding.

Yep.  And she had sex a lot!  And worse, she was in LAW ENFORCEMENT!  Those are two words that no republican wants to hear these days.

I was just thinking about the republican mind if Harris picked a female VP  Their heads would start to smoke and gibberish would start coming out of their mouths.

Well, someone who meets the Midwest White Guy specification is Pete Buttigieg, and I'll bet that would also make their heads smoke.

Now this is just hilarious! So ole' Joe thinks the Democratic party wants another old geezer who just left the party to replace Biden???

Sen. Joe Manchin considering a run for president, sources say

Sources close to Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia independent, said he’s considering re-registering as a Democrat and throwing his hat into the ring to run for president.

Hi Robert,

It would seem as though every politician in Washington, DC has delusions of grandeur.

Harris will be the nominee and will ignite excitement within the party and the electorate. But maybe not in the crucial swing states leading to the possibility of a historic popular vote lead and an electoral college loss.

I agree. She’s a progressive, and she’ll energize some people who might not have voted, but she won’t energize any moderates

I don't get the "I need to be energized" argument.

The prospect of having that deranged moron in the Whitehouse again, energizes me to vote for ANYONE the Democrats put up against him.

I was going to comment about poor turnout in national election for the US. But maybe I'll just bite my tongue because it is actually almost identical to Canada's at about 63%.

A great many people in the US do not follow politics to any significant degree.  They have heard of Trump, of course, but many have not heard about his trial for sexual assault or his felony convictions.  At best they'll say "yeah I heard something about that - what was it again?"  They've never heard about his tweets where he wants to be a dictator, or wants to "terminate" the "phony" Constitution.

So they are going to go off what they see on airport TVs, or on the cover of People Magazine, or some political ad they see.  And if they like the candidate based on those fleeting glimpses they'll vote for them.  Which is one reason Trump won in 2016 - every time people saw him he was yelling and people were cheering.  Every time they saw Clinton she was thinking or making a boring speech.

Some data on this:

Only 56% people ages 18-34 follow political news either closely or somewhat closely, and 11% of them don't follow it at all.  And this was from a landline telephone poll, which famously skews towards people who are willing to talk about politics i.e. people who are already predisposed to follow it.  (Gallup 2024)

But everyone follows Jerry Baumchen, apparently.

While Jerry and I disagree on political matters. He is a man of integrity whom I respect greatly. I sometimes wish we could all schedule an evening firepit with a few beers and solve the world's problems.

And that "need for energizing" is exactly what makes a celebrity candidate more attractive across an entire country. Ergo, frankly, someone like Mark Kelly. Yes, it's pandering, but maybe it's also the future. Zelensky has done a pretty good job in Ukraine, after all.

For most people there is something in the platform for or against a politician. Energizing gets them off the couch or out of the bar on election day.

For the 40% that don't vote the daily grind of paying bills, raising kids, finding a doctor, getting groceries, etc. Totally occupies their mind.Or they don't appreciate the difference that a political party has on their existence. Meaningless existence....no, no I never said that.

Me too.

I've said more than once that if it was Trump vs Howdy Doody (with Clarabelle the Clown as his VP), I'd vote Howdy.

Prior to the debate debacle, I felt Biden had a decent chance of winning.
That chance has evaporated in the past few weeks.

However, I don't think Harris has much of a chance.
A woman of color won't be able to win the undecideds, the uninvolved, the casual racists and misogynists

If she's the candidate, she has my vote.
But I don't think there is enough of that mentality to beat Trump.
I hope I'm wrong.

Or that she gets replaced by someone who can win.

I distinctly recall a respected pundit on this forum saying back in 2008 that a black junior senator from Illinois was unelectable.....
