Video: Landing a Wingsuit on water without chute...BS or Real

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who says that if you bubble the water to reduce the surface tension issues, it'd be very possible.

Of course, you'd be really, really, deep in bubbly water then, wearing a parachute and a wingsuit :o

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

In High School near us was a place called Holiday Sands. It's a lake/water park. I'm sure everyone has one nearby. This particular park had a huge slide into the water. After blazing up I decided it would be cool to go head first and skip off the water. One of the most painful things I've ever done. I think the impact with the water forced the blood out of my heart.[:/]

Please don't dent the planet.

If stacked boxes can do the job, I bet aerated water could too. It works for high-divers.

Let's get Purple Mike to give it a shot. ;)

you can DO just about anything....:| if you have big imagination big equipment big financing and big balls... as for the video..and proximity wingsuiting in general... i think the visuals and world travel HAVE to be breathtaking...!!! :oB|:) ) that's quite enough , thanks... For all those who are juiced, with " Youthful Enthusiasm ", regardless of age :P the choice is yours... to Launch... But let's BE careful out there... Now i Know that wingers can get some pretty good forward momentum going, but you can bet your ass, that they are also making ALOT of vertical footage,, in the Down direction.. This guys entry angle is SOOoo shallow, as to be discrediting to "the effort ":S:S ... and a "slight" slight, to the cardboard Box Man...whose name now escapes me....B| My Mamma told me " believe half of what you see, Sonny, NONE of what you hear " :P:)

"aerated water?"
I don't know if the video is real or fake, but you can't aerate /bubbly water a lake.

Sure you can.
Whether it's useful for a landing or not is another topic.
I predict we'll see a real occurrence of this in the coming year.

Note the product placement shot at 1:16 for some stupid brand of shaving cream. Sure looks like a deceptive viral marketing video to me. *sigh* Nothing against commercials, mind you, but the levels of dishonesty in this shit is right up there with so-called "reality tv."

Def fake, but the part where he is "skimming" the water reminded me of the aerodynamic phenomena known as "wing in ground effect". When skimming the surface of the ground (or water), starting within one wingspan of that surface, induced drag is reduced thus increasing lift. Anyone who has flown a high wing Cessna and a low wing Piper has felt the difference. It would be interesting to run the numbers to determine what wing-loading would be required to get the suit stall speed low enough to be survivable (repeatably) when in ground effect on water. Add the aeration as a safety factor. Interesting, especially since the current suits have a fairly small span, that's a really small margin for error.
