I just watched the PBS documentary I posted in post 111. A couple things I learned:

1. The jury (all white of course) acquitted based on the defense's argument that they could not prove the body found was Emmett Till. Thanks of course to the face being beaten beyond recognition.

2. 4 months after the trial, the two murderers sold their story to "Look" magazine for $4000. Thanks to double jeopardy rules, they could tell what they did without fear of prosecution. Their story did not impicate anyone else, although there is suspicion other people may have been involved.

You are right, as you pose the question. I wasn't trying to defend Winsor, per se, I was more thinking of Feynman's initial explanation in his "The world From Another Point of View". Victim blaming is not only offensive but it is also low hanging fruit. Thar be dragons.

Meanwhile, in other Florida news, Florida is now making headlines for  . . . leprosy.  There's a big outbreak there in people that don't have the usual risk factors (weakened immune systems etc.)

Republicans in Texas have become worried that voters may become too educated costing the party votes in the long run. So they have started to close the libraries in schools and turning them into disciplinary rooms for disruptive students. Probably meaning students with learning disabilities.

At a recent protest about these actions by republican Gov. Greg Abbott protestors had signs stating even prisons have libraries. Elected school board officials are being replaced by GOP appointees. Including ones who have lost recent elections.

Things change with time. When I was a child abuse investigator in the 1970's, the stated rule was that children never lie about sexual abuse. Never.

Think that still holds? Nope, it doesn't. Because publicity (i.e. 24 hour news, the internet, etc)  makes everything a moving piece. Children are smart enough to use that as a weapon, whether for good or for evil. But assuming that parents are always right, and that children must therefore be lying if they accuse them of sexual abuse it at least as wrong.

Same with gender transition in Sweden. They haven't stopped it completely, but are strictly limiting it because of soaring numbers. Think publicity.
