Are there any of the announced hopefuls old school republicans? News coverage certainly never covers them. i.e. conservatives without the populism.

That'd be the kiss of death for too many people who kind of like Trump but think he's gone too far, or who have a lot of Trumpist friends they hang out with. Better to keep people in doubt at this time, unfortunately.

They can keep each other in doubt about that as much as they do on too many other issues but they ain't foolin' the bigger half.

I think liberals have tax cheats, too. Along with a lot of the other. OTOH, we’re not proud of it, and we try not to double down on any of those.

So maybe it’s the party of proud grifters, polluters, bigots, tax cheats, racists, science deniers, book burners and the poorly educated.

The IRS is badly understaffed and cutting its funding, a GOP priority, is a gift to tax cheats.

Currently, the tax gap, which is the amount in taxes that are owed but not paid, comes to nearly $700 Billion a year. 60% of the tax gap is due to underreporting of income by the top 10% of taxpayers, and more than a quarter comes from the top 1%.

But the IRS has been left without the resources to hire and support agents who can catch wealthy tax cheats. The audit of (known cheat) Trump was staffed by exactly one IRS agent.. Audits of millionaires have dropped 61% in less than a decade. For those making more than $5 million, the audit rate has dropped 87%.

Nazis & KKK.

Admittedly, they fall under 'bigots', 'racists', 'book burners' and 'the poorly educated'.

But they're their own group of 'very fine people'.

This^^^  its shameful to think a national party wants the entire tax system to be crippled while claiming the deficit is important.

But then again they put their lackeys on the USSC. So I guess its all perspective.

Hi folks,

Add a couple more to the list:  The week will be a busy one for GOP announcements. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is planning to launch his campaign Tuesday evening

Mike Pence to launch campaign for president in Iowa June 7 | AP News

Let's hope the crazy crowd has 10 or 20 debates; should be fun watching.

Hi folks,

From the link:  Let the games begin.

I am very sure it will be a game.  The only question is who will be gaming who.

First GOP debate qualification rules: who’s in, who's out, and who’s sweating - POLITICO

I wonder if they will let Trump elbow his way into the center again.

But will his ego let him skip an event with live television cameras?

trump would never miss it. He is the master of put downs, speaking over and snide remarks. He is probably bouncing the best off his inner circle right now. While getting his back office boys working to ensure there is a cream puff for a moderator. So he can butt in, ramble on and cut lies. As often as he likes.

Chris Christie has accurately defined the GOP America"

"Kushner served in his father-in law’s administration as an adviser who was tasked with policy in the Middle East. Kushner incorporated Affinity in Delaware in January 2021, shortly after former President Trump left office. Six months later, he received the $2 billion investment, according to the House committee.

“You think it’s because he’s some kind of investing genius? Or do you think it’s because he was sitting next to the president of the United States for four years doing favors for the Saudis?” Christie asked on Tuesday. “That’s your money. That’s your money he stole and gave it to his family. You know what that makes us? A banana republic.”

It's depressingly remarkable how quickly a great nation can be turned into a banana republic by a populist.

Even not great countries. Poland, Hungary, Turkey are all NATO members with populist governments. Israel is headed that way. I'd say that the US had a brush with populism with the USSC as the lasting residual of it.

Wave the flag, attack a free press, rally the message against imagined enemies and state that only you have the easy answers.

There was recently a big event (in right wing circles) in the UK called NatCon which was attended by quite a few government ministers. It stood for Nationalist Conservatism, and was a first effort to import the politics of the looney wing of the Republican Party into Britain. One of the speakers was the chair of the Heritage Foundation and he directly praised Viktor Orban’s regime as the kind of conservative government the US and UK should be aiming for if only we could get the liberal power brokers out of the way.

I don’t think he understood how fucking crazy that sounds to most ears on this side of the pond. Why do US conservatives love Orban? He’s a proto-dictator who will crack down on any personal or press freedom that he doesn’t like or which works against his interests. Is there any other reason to admire him than because he’s an overt racist and homophobe?

trump had the aim of turning the US into a Hungary state. All that he managed to get cone was hamstring the government with tax cuts and USSC appointments.

Is it true they go by the shorthand of "Nat-C" because they figured going straight to "Nazi" would be a little too on the nose?

DeSantis has laid out his national vision for America in a new manifesto- book. It paints a picture for anyone brain dead who has never heard of history. "The Courage to Be Free: Florida's Blueprint for America's Revival" A little study of the ideas in this modern day Mein Kampf should be required reading for anyone who wants to protect democracy.

Wikipedia, a NYT story on the book. Some snippets:  "DeSantis argues for more executive power, boasting his use of the veto to control Florida's House of Representatives and Senate," Why not just label him a demigod and do away with senates and representatives? "quotes himself telling Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White that he would "overrule any mayor that gives [the UFC] a hard time".[4] By contrast, in Dreams from Our Founding Fathers, he criticizes Barack Obama for executive overreach, accusing Kathleen Sebelius of using her power to "intimidate private businesses for engaging in speech she didn't like".[3]"

DeSantis has painted himself as more right than trump. He is as dangerous as trump to the power of ten and its no wonder that followers like Slim is the result.

Republicans have attacked the IRS cutting its funding and labeling it as a enemy of the rich, er the people. They have attacked the justice system.

Its time to fund the FBI to investigate more not less politicians. In France its former leader was sentenced for corruption

In the UK its former PM, BoJo, Biris Johnson resigned over lying in parliament.

In Scotland "Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested by police investigating the finances of the governing Scottish National Party, British media said Sunday. Police Scotland said a 52-year-old woman was detained “as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.”

In America there is talk that even if trump is convicted of all of the crimes he committed. He should not go to prison because the image that a president behind bars is too divisive.

Who, other than the Trumpanzee morons, are suggesting THAT?

The idea that because he used to have a particular job (that he was fired from) should exempt him from consequences for breaking the law (and some rather serious laws at that) is utter bullshit.

If he did what he's accused of (and it sure seems like he did), he needs to suffer the consequences.
The idea that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL basically says that no one is above the law.
The DOJ policy that an unimpeached President cannot be indicted is abhorrent.

There are quite a few high ranking government folks that have gone to prison (State Governors, Congressional Representatives, ect). Pretending that the President is different is just flat out wrong.
