Childbirth mortality and race in the US

Recommended Posts

Good article in The NY Times. I know it’s behind a paywall, so here are a couple of charts if you don’t want to turn Java off (or whatever)

California; Black vs White infant mortality. BTW Califórnia is better than most of the rest of the country. I’m using my phone, so photo copying and editing are limited

Second chart is maternal mortality US vs other highly industrialized countries

One thing to remember is that in the US, more money buys better medical care, including for high-risk pregnancies and fertility treatments (which are more likely to be high risk — more twins, and women who don’t carry pregnancies easily.

Personally, I think this is an indictment of the US profit-driven medical system. There are systemic reasons for the racial disparity, with a lot of references in the article. Not just “well they’re all fat and have high blood pressure” or some bullshit like that

Here is about 40% of the cause. From New England Journal of Medicine. May 2022

"the leading cause of death among children and adolescents, defined as persons 1 to 19 years of age.4 Since 2016, that gap has narrowed, and in 2020, firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death in that age group (Figure 1). From 2019 to 2020, the relative increase in the rate of firearm-related deaths of all types (suicide, homicide, unintentional, and undetermined) among children and adolescents was 29.5% — more than twice as high as the relative increase in the general population. The increase was seen across most demographic characteristics and types of firearm-related death"

So guns and keeping the rich rich and the poor poor. But at least abortion is restricted.
