Dude, where are my hurricanes?

Recommended Posts

You guys just don’t understand. It’s hurricanes in August that are important. However crazy the hurricane season ends up being, there weren’t any by August 15th and you can take that to the bank.

Just like the fact that May was one cold month, and you know what that means. I sure as hell don’t, but come on, what more proof do you need?

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Typhoon Noru has reached winds equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/24/asia/super-typhoon-noru-karding-heads-for-philippines/index.html

Dude, where's brent?

Swept out to sea? Ian is currently at 155 mph sustained winds. A Cat 5 is 157 mph sustained.

Funny how these GOP folks are all against the federal government until they need assistance from it.

As a newly elected congress member in 2013, now-governor of Florida Ron DeSantis was one of the 67 House Republicans who voted against a $9.7 billion federal flood insurance assistance package for the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. Now, with Florida on the ropes, DeSantis asked President Joe Biden for an emergency declaration to free up federal money and federal help even before the storm hit, and said Tuesday, “We all need to work together, regardless of party lines.”

Seriously.  It didn't take long for the greens to claim climate change.  One could almost see them salivating as Ian spun up.

Ian's cost to Florida is estimated to be $20-40 billion with a $7 billion hit in tourism. Naturally the feds will be hit for some of that cost. Citizens insurance will get a big subsidy from DeSantis. Another 1/2 dozen independent commercial insurers will exit the state.

Just business as usual in GOP Florida.

DeSantis voted against disaster assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2013. He’s already requested it for Florida.

He doesn’t accept that his sole judgment (and that of people like his) is not, in fact, the be all and end all

Well, and you guys act as if there won't be any more - and therefore there's no climate change.

Well there likely won't be more of them. Studies seem to indicate that Global Warming is reducing or at last stabilizing the number of hurricanes/cyclones. However the proportion of hurricanes/cyclones reaching category 4 or 5 and the rainfall rate are expected to increase due to climate change. So less of them doing more damage.

And it didn't take long for the "why would I pay for other people" crowd to start screaming "we need money, send us money...help...help"

Hehe...you guys act as if there's never been a hurricane before.

Ron DeSantis said it was a 1 in 500 years flooding event. So your own party is telling you that you’ve never seen a hurricane like this before.

This is what I love about the greens.  It's the prefect set up to take any outcome and make it fit.

Analytical solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations do not exist, which is why there is a lot of uncertainty on what's going to happen.

Fluid motion, hence weather, is driven by temperature gradients, not just temperature.

NASA, NOAA and other organisations run very powerful supercomputers to try to simulate climate models, some try to solve a form of Navier-Stokes numerically (probably LES, maybe even Euler approximations). It's a very active area of research and there are no sure answers yet.

But a rando like you is so sure what's going to happen, right?

The greens? You mean the majority of the population that accepts the concept that CO2 is increasing and warming the planet, those greens? A warmer atmosphere is a more energetic atmosphere. It is not a giant leap to more energetic storms.

Republicans. Can ignore any fact and spin the situation to fit what they see in the rear view mirror.

"Hurricane Ian could be the storm that chills entire swaths of Florida’s growth-at-any-cost real estate market...Now, people forced to rebuild their lives will encounter a combination of soaring insurance premiums, construction costs and interest rates — along with the fact that many of the homes inundated by Ian didn’t even have flood insurance....Early projections from after Ian’s landfall showed overall insured losses alone topping $30 billion... just 18 percent of homeowners have coverage through the federally run National Flood Insurance Program. Those federal policies also only cover up to $250,000 in damage "

The right wing, never ones to let a disaster go unexploited, has decided that this is the angle they are going with:

"DeAnna Lorraine, who ran for Congress in 2020, and Lauren Witzke, who was the Delaware GOP's candidate for Senate in 2020, agree that Hurricane Ian is the deep state using "weather manipulation technology" to punish Gov. Ron DeSantis for not enacting a vaccine mandate in Florida."
