The danger of unbiased media

Recommended Posts

Unbiased media presents a real danger to some politicians.  It is likely that this was the reason for Trump's regular attacks on most media during his presidency, as well as his "cozying up" to FOX News.

To test this theory, researchers offered incentives to regular FOX watchers to watch other networks for a month (specifically CNN.)  Afterwards they realized that FOX News was being very selective in what they reported on Trump: "Consistent with this, treated participants concluded that Fox concealed negative information about President Trump."  Further they realized that FOX News was doing this deliberately - "Treatment group participants became more likely to agree that if Donald Trump made a mistake, Fox News would not cover it—i.e., that Fox News engages in partisan coverage filtering."

There was also a realization that FOX was emphasizing things that were perhaps not the most important issues of the day.  For example, participants realized after watching CNN for a bit that FOX News was playing up news from racially motivated protests over police behavior, and suppressing news about COVID-19.

Thats probably why Truth Social aka Digital World Acquisition Corp has cratered in price from $97 to $56 now. With more dropping to come.

"nearly a month after its launch, Truth Social has become a laughingstock, marked by a botched rollout, a share price collapse and, in Trump, a figurehead who doesn’t actually post much to his own social media platform....According to the Daily Beast, people close to Trump “have heard the former president on the phone swearing gratuitously and asking things like: ‘What the fuck is going on’” with Truth Social... In early March the network was averaging just 300,000 visits each day, according to the Daily Beast. Truth Social spent 21-23 February as the most downloaded app on the Apple app store, according to Similarweb, but by 12 March it was only the 173rd most popular app."

Finally last week trump asked his marketing firm to investigate why there was only one user left on the platform. His marketing firm contacted the last user. A guy named "Brent". Who couldn't comment because he was crying in his soup. Over the dismal state of republican affairs.

I’m devastated that, in spite of the imminent sweeping of both the House and Senate this fall, the margin in the Senate won’t be veto-proof [cry]

In all seriousness, the diminishing influence of Trump is only a good thing for the Republicans.

I thought to post this, too, but didn't want the push back. $15 an hour they paid Fox watchers to watch CNN instead. Amazingly, they were smarter after only 3 hours. Flossing takes longer for a noticeable change.

Heey.. wait a second; https://adfontesmedia.com/product/media-bias-chart-latest-edition/#iLightbox[]/0

Were they working on the theory that if they go from right to left then they would end up in the center?  If they switched from Fox to CNN then they were never exposed to the 'real danger' of unbiased media.

Nope.  They used a farther right channel, then a more centrist left-leaning channel.  The lesson here is not "watch CNN" but rather that people are more informed when they don't stick to a single source of information.

Watching people on Facebook it's pretty clear who watches FOX News exclusively.  They believe, for example, that:

-Biden closed the Keystone pipeline
-The Keystone used to move mostly domestic oil to refineries in the South
-The COVID shutdowns didn't work
-There are more deaths from the vaccines than from COVID
-Biden is in legal trouble but Trump is not

etc etc.  Those people would be better informed if they watched some more centrist reporting.

Pffft.

Those people don't WANT TO BE 'better informed'.

They want their bigotry, prejudices and misinformation to be confirmed.

They want to ban CRT because it would make them face the truth.
They want to ban teaching sex ed to kids because it would make it harder for them to exploit those same kids (all the while screaming lies about 'democratic pedophiles).

The phrase is 'willfully ignorant'.

They CHOOSE to be ignoramuses.
They just want to believe what they think is true.

Reality isn't part of their identity.

Not unbiased, but a lot closer to centre and real news rather than propaganda. So pretty good overall.

"A Nebraska state senator, Bruce Bostelman, last month warned of an alarming new variety of deviance making its way into the state’s schools. “It’s something called furries,” he said. Schoolchildren, Bostelman claimed, were identifying as cats or dogs. “They meow and they bark.” And educators, indulging them, “are wanting to put litter boxes in the schools for the children to use,” said Bostelman.

Perhaps needless to say, none of this was true. Bostelman later apologized for spreading falsehoods, saying, “It was just something I felt that if this really was happening, we needed to address it and address it quickly.” From a NYT story.

No his wife wasn't serving him catnip for lunch. This story was reported around the world. People go inline and check out their brains at the mouse.

OAN lost a distribution channel today:

DirecTV dropped OAN today, rejecting GOP pleas to keep right-wing network

That's a shame.

That likely won't make much of a difference to the new mainstream republican party.

At an America First Political Action Committee meeting in Orlando recently the call rang out. “Can we get a round of applause for Russia?” he asked. The crowd chanted “Putin! Putin!”  For the US congresswoman in attendance it was more of the same.

"As mainstream republicans are pushed out of trump's party. U.S. conservative evangelicals have developed strong symbolic and institutional ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. In recent years, these have dovetailed with white racist fantasies of Russia as an ethnically pure land of traditional religion and gender roles, symbolized by the bare-chested kleptocrat on horseback, Vladimir Putin...

In the summer of 2018, the white supremacist League of the South debuted a bold new initiative on its website: in Russian, the neo-Confederates invited “the Russian people” to understand themselves as “natural allies” of white U.S. southerners in the fight “against the destructive influence of globalism.”

As descendants of white Europeans, we come from the same genetic pool. As heirs of the European cultural tradition, we share the same values, traditions, and way of life. And as Christians, we worship the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and our common Faith binds us as brothers and sisters. We Southerners believe in a society built on real organic factors such as Blood, Culture, and Religion."

This article summarizes the current delema of the US Christian right and the war in Ukraine. "War in Ukraine is testing some American evangelicals’ support for Putin as a leader of conservative values"

Reading this I was reminded of the retired woman at the congressional town hall who said afterward it was the first she had ever heard that the Mueller Report contained negative findings against Trump. (The member of Congress escapes my recall, but it was a moderate Republican)
