CRT in VA

If CRT was never taught in public schools in Virginia, why are some folks upset that Governor Youngkin has now banned the teaching of CRT in public schools in Virginia?

I don't know enough about the topic to have an opinion.

 

If people are getting mad at the ban my guess would be that the ban restricts things beyond CRT as well and that is the origin of their discontent

Because banning the study of history never ends well.  CRT encompasses the study of structural discrimination.  If a right wing school district decides that that includes any mention of Rosa Parks and/or the Holocaust - then the next generation is screwed.

Nobody is banning the study of history. Youngkin is banning the teaching of CRT.  If CRT was never taught to begin with, why would folks have a problem with banning a curriculum that was never taught?

How are the racists and bigots going to keep their racism & bigotry going if we teach people how pervasive and ingrained it is?

How else are the politicians going to pander to their racist and bigoted base if they don't continue to perpetuate the lies and misinformation about CRT?
Particularly the lie that "CRT says all white people are racist".

When the privileged are forced to treat those 'below' them as equals, they will claim that they are being discriminated against.

Teaching an accurate history of racism, and how it's a bad thing across the board?   Fine.

Teaching how some racism is good and other racism is bad?  Not acceptable.

As a 'funny' aside, I guess I'm not terribly surprised that it was Virginia that banned CRT in public schools.

In 1958, after the SC decided that segregated schools were 'bad' (Brown v Board of Education), Virginia chose to SHUT DOWN public schools rather than desegregate them.
In the county were the lawsuit originated, the schools were shut down for FIVE YEARS. 

Funny that I had never learned this in 'school'.

I found out about it when I read the book "Hidden Figures", because the women profiled in the book were in that part of Virginia, working at the Langley Research facility.

Folks were mocked for suggesting CRT was taught in public schools by the same people who are now crying foul for the elimination of something that, supposedly, never existed in the first place.

I'll regret this, but - we were right to mock them. CRT wasn't being taught in public schools.

The propaganda campaign of conflating anything at all race related or even generally progressive with the buzzword of CRT has worked exactly as intended and completely muddied the waters, so you can label anything talking about race and its role in past society as CRT. Then you get to ban it as if it were the bogeyman.
