Roger Kotanka, old-time Simcoe, Ontario jumper killed by police

Recommended Posts

Roger Kotanka was an old-time skydiver who jumped at Simcoe, Ontario during the 1970s and 1980s. Roger was an avid skydiver and canopy formation flyer when the concept was first introduced. Police shot Kotanka- 3 November, 2021 - in his gunsmithing shop during a raid. Kotanka was a licensed master gunsmith well know to police. The Toronto police officer who shot Kotanka has refused to share his notes with police SIU investigators. Police are being slow in releasing details of the shooting. Police drove more than an hour to Kotanka's home and brought an ambulance.

This mysterious shooting reminds me of Alfred Pinisch's death during a robbery at the Montreal gun shop where he worked. The shooting occurred during the August 1964 when Montreal banks were frequently robbed by gun-totting criminal gangs. However, this robbery was an attempt by the FLQ to arm violent separatists who had been planting bombs around Montreal. Police shot Pinisch mistaking him for a robber. I met Alfred many times when he competed in rifle matches matches with my father (Major Edson Warner, CD, 5 x Queen's Medal and 2 x Olympic competitor).

CALIBRE Magazine, Volume 10/Issue 1 contains a 4-page article about Roger Kotanko's death during a police raid. It details publicaly-available information about the bungled police raid, but raises more questions than it answers. Police refuse to answer questions during the investigation.

The article does not mention any of Roger's skydiving experience.

A witness named C.W. recently filed a lawsuit against police and Kotanko's estate citing psychological trauma, etc.

C.W. alleges that he was a customer/witness inside Kotanko's workshop when police burst in and killed Kotanko.

It is odd that the lawsuit only mentions C.W.'s initials ... which makes us wonder if C.W. was a police informant?????????

A key question is why police followed Kotanko back from the grocery store and allowed him to enter his gun shop before starting the arrest procedure.

Why does this remind us of the bungled police raid on Waco, Texas????????

A video about this lawsuit had been posted by Runkle at the Bailey on www.youtube.com. Runkle is a Canadian criminal defense attorney who mostly posts about Canadian gun laws. Runkle cuts through much of the ...... legal boilerplate in the initial filing. He also points out a couple of miss-spellings. Hah! Hah!

It has been almost 2 years since Kotanko's death. Let's hope that this lawsuit defies Canadian legal custom by resolving quickly.
