Texas, the GOP, Abortion and the USSC

Recommended Posts

Well republicans are at it again. Pandering to their god and their base. They have passed a new law effectively banning abortion and The Supreme Court did not take action early Wednesday on a request to block a Texas law prohibiting most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, allowing the most restrictive abortion law in the nation to go into effect.

Of course per GOP SOP protecting children has nothing to do with this equation. "More kids were hospitalized with Covid-19 this month than any other time this past year -- proving how seriously the Delta variant can hit any age group.

Between August 20 and 26, an average of 330 children were admitted to hospitals every day with Covid-19, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." Yet the GOP has put anti-vax, anti-masking freedom above their rights.

trump's branding of the court is evident. So anyone who believes that all judges are not political can dissuade themselves of such notions.

From the NYT link:

But the Texas law was drafted to make it difficult to challenge in court. Usually, a lawsuit seeking to block a law because it is unconstitutional would name state officials as defendants. But the Texas law bars state officials from enforcing it and instead deputizes private individuals to sue anyone who performs the procedure or “aids and abets” it.

The patient may not be sued, but doctors, staff members at clinics, counselors, people who help pay for the procedure, even an Uber driver taking a patient to an abortion clinic are all potential defendants. Plaintiffs, who need not have any connection to the matter or show any injury from it, are entitled to $10,000 and their legal fees recovered if they win. Prevailing defendants are not entitled to legal fees.

This is asinine beyond belief. Anyone trying to sue will promptly have their suit tossed for lack of standing.

Hi Robert,

I was just about to respond with the same thought.

They simply lack standing.

Does a gun improve their standing?

Coming soon to an abortion clinic in Texas. Armed sheriffs with a AR-15 in one hand and a bible in another.

They may have won that battle but they're losing the war.  No need to travel to a clinic when various aid groups will mail the abortion pills straight to your door.

Or go to the vet and say your pet has stomach ulces and needs misoprostol.  I'm sure the GOP will approve since they are currently scarfing down copious amount of invermectin

What exactly do you expect when you have three "justices" appointed by a president who received 4M fewer votes than his opponent, confirmed by a Senate whose majority received fewer votes in total than their opponents.

Tyranny of the minority.  Rule by ignoramus.

Things like this will motivate those who disagree to use their votes to do something about it. Abuse of power like this will cost the right their hold over states.

As long as there are so many talking heads ginning up opposition to anything “liberal” and telling people they’re on the team, there’ll be plenty of people who will keep voting with groups that want to stay on top by stepping on others, not by being better. One way to do that is to redefine “better” as something like yourself.
I’m concerned.

I knew this was a bad judgement, I hadn't realised how bad though.

The US takes one big step away from the civilised world.

It can now be used in favour of some other items though. I hope a Democratic state will now use the same scheme to oppose gun ownership, or maybe ammunition ownership.

On that note, another of the laws that came into effect here in the great state of TX yesterday was to legalize no-permit carry:

No Permit Required

Freedom is codifying armed vigilantes to enforce religion based rules.

But, have you heard about what is happening in Afghanistan and the Taliban? Disgraceful! Thankfully we are in Texas, land of the free.
