Woke is a Joke

TL:DR - Word salad by Winsor. Again.

Nah. Deliberate misunderstanding.

Bill never said he 'learned a lot', or 'learned everything there is to know'.

He said he realized he had a lot more to learn.

Big difference there.

Been there/done that.

There have been a variety of situations where I 'thought I knew what I needed to know', but found, to my chagrin, that I knew a lot less than I thought I did and had a lot to learn.

Fortunately , as I get older, that happens less and less.
Not that I don't have situations where I need to learn a lot, but more that I don't go into situations thinking I know everything.

I won't bother to outdo your Wokelogue, but it does more to invalidate your stance than to support it.

"Africa for a month?"  Shirley, you jest!  If you said you had spent a month vacationing at the Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort it would equally qualify you as an expert on all things Native American.  Africa is a huge place, and anything but monolithic.

You got to know ONE trans person and that makes you equally an expert in the field?  You don't get out much.

What Bill said at the end was, "I realized I have a lot to learn.  Working on it." And, I think what he said about "Woke" = "Aware" is important.

On a similar note, I had a contractor in the house and we were discussing this - he's quite educated, degrees in econ from a Calif school, etc.  And he used the "I have black friends" thing. I spent a couple of days chewing on it and came up with this hypothesis:

Maybe what they're saying is, "I used to be more prejudiced than now" - IOW I'm aware that I wasn't.  So, instead of beating them up with the Ooooooh, SO you have black friends routine; ask them when did you realize you were prejudice?

BTW - that is a CRT principle.

Except that Bill didn't say that his month in Africa and his management of a trans woman made him an expert, or even knowledgeable. It just illuminated the degree of his ignorance. That's valuable. There might even be things you're ignorant of, Winsor.

Wendy P.

Most assuredly, but I don't aspire to 'Woke' status in the first place.

It is my experience that people who presume to 'educate' me by and large consist of fatuous assholes who know slightly less than nothing themselves.  There are, of course, exceptions.

What if they're trying to educate you about people like them? Even if you're not interested, because you think you already know enough?

Woke, to many people, is an acknowledgment that they didn't, in fact, already know enough.

You mean that some people need to 'wake up' to the fact that they don't know everything?

No, that can't be possible.

It was pointed out to me a while back, that I can learn something from everyone I encounter.
Of course, some people are only able to teach me what an asshole looks like, but at least I can learn that.

But then, being me, I try to imagine what they went through to get there in the first place. I've had a couple of acquaintances who were roundly considered to be assholes. But both were noticeably on the autism/Asperger's spectrum, one had had an abusive father, and the other had an older brother who was incredibly good-looking and personable ("why can't you be more like Johnny?"). So, well, stuff.

Doesn't make them easier to deal with, but each wants to, and has, contributed to the world in ways that satisfy them.

Except out here in the real world you'd be canceled for that little joke.

I’m pretty sure this is the real world just the same as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are the real world. So let’s see what happens to Joe, shall we?

Here, in what I’m sure you think is a haven of lefty liberal bleeding heart craziness, shall we see if Joe actually gets cancelled?

He says, at the beginning of another rambling 10 paragraph post taking in Samoa, the Holy Roman Empire, casinos and the persecution of the Jews (humanity’s only genuine victims, apparently) as if breadth of babble is an acceptable substitute for having a point.

Oh I think Joe should go on some social media site and have at it.  Chappelle might have some pointers.

One of the reasons I like Dizzy is no one really reads or cares about my thoughts, other than you derelicts. :D

Oh, I don't think it's so much a matter of not knowing everything as not being particularly worked up about it one way or another.  I don't expect someone from, say, Lhasa to be all that concerned about what I, my family and people like me have gone through.

It's rather an abstraction, eliciting at best a 'that's nice' or 'that's too bad.'  Nothing personal.

Which makes it all the stranger that the presence of ‘woke’ celebrities at a film awards show works you into a frothing at the mouth frenzy.

I guess this advice is very much a “do as Winsor says, not as Winsor does” kinda thing.

Might depend on a number of things. They might be WW2 scholars, Jewish, skydivers, or simply empathetic and naturally interested in others.

Oddly enough, you could not do more to support my observation that religion is by its very nature a communicable form of mental illness - typically a disease of denial - and that woke is a particularly virulent set of religious delusions.

You got to know ONE trans person and that makes you equally an expert in the field?  You don't get out much.

Margaret Mitchell went to Samoa and interviewed people, who took delight in telling all sorts of nonsense to the gullible young researcher.  She then left 'knowing' all about their culture and made a career of her 'insight.'   Good for her.

Your Catholic education is telling.  Godwin aside, the Vatican struck a bargain in the early '30s by underwriting the opponents of the Communists, who were all for absorbing the Vatican into the Italian fold, to include said opposition in the heart of the former Holy Roman Empire.  Since the outcome of this bargain resulted in Jews (and Romana, and homosexuals et al.) being excised in the process, it amounted to doing God's work in accordance with the history of the Church.  Of course their spin puts them on the side of the angels.

Trying to expunge the indoctrination of a Catholic upbringing is akin to removing anchovies from a pizza.  Good luck with that.

All the rationalization for Woke fails to make it anything short of FUBAR.

BSBD,

Winsor

Thank you for providing this fine example of a strawman argument.

Correct.  All it did was give me a little perspective on what it was like to be a minority - and how much I didn't understand.

Again, no, apparently you didn't read my post.  I thought I understood.  Then I met her and realized I didn't really understand trans people.  (Or more accurately that I understood about 1% of what their lives were like.)

Keep in mind that not everyone can be the expert you see yourself to be.  I used to be the 100 jump wonder; at least now I am at the stage where I realize how much I don't know.  Some people will always be that 100 jump wonder.  It's the way of things.

When we went through pre-Cana (Amy was Presbyterian!  O the horror) the priest in New York was a very down to Earth guy.  "I realize that what I am trying to do is pretty silly.  Me - a celibate guy who has never been married - is trying to give relationship advice to a couple who has been together for ten years.  So I'm not going to do that.  I'm just going to give you my number and offer you any help you might need with the whole marriage process."  We used that number a few times to deal with the absurd and byzantine process of getting married in the Catholic church.

The priest we met with in San Diego was considerably older, and gave us all sorts of advice.  How to manage our money.  How to deal with birth control.  How often to have sex.  Even recommended us to a couple who taught natural family planning, the one "accepted" form of birth control.  They gave a talk, and admitted they had had two "unexpected" kids.  "But it wasn't the fault of NFP!" they said.  "We screwed up, not the program."

You remind me of that second priest - often wrong, never in doubt.

Aren't you trying to 'educate' everyone here on how evil woke ideology is?

Nope, just venting my spleen.

People likely to get it have already figured it out.  Those who think Woke is a Good Thing are sure to view anything I say as heresy.

What else is new?

You would agree if you would just listen to Winsor explain Critical Jewish Theory one more time.

Ok, now I've looked into a little more. "Woke" is traced back to a Huddy Ledbetter song about throwing off some of the yoke of oppression. Then it was used by people as a term to say they were aware. Then the right wing media types picked up on it and turned it into another one of their meaningless lame insults. It is now alongside SJW and cuck as terms they throw around to belittle people who oppose them. Because they get amusement and ad revenue from firing up the base.

I'm not sure what I did that wounded you so deeply, but it was not my intent.

I am somewhat surprised to find how thin skinned you are, I can think of no reason you should be so insecure.

I hope you get over whatever is wrong with you.

All the best,

Thanks, I would love it if I could elicit a coherent response more often than not.  It would certainly be refreshing.
