Incentives to vax

Logic? Didn't work. Money? Nope? Explain the science? Fugehdaboudit. Now, this might work:

"Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine say that their study found men who previously did not suffer from erectile dysfunction but developed it severely after their COVID-19 infection."

I'm thinking we are on the way to herd immunity.

That's USA health care in a nutshell.

Birth control?  Supplying that is a SIN!  Women will use it to have SEX!  Why are we supplying illegal immigrant women with (practically) free birth control just so they can have sex?  Why don't you spend your own money if you just want to be a slut?

But Viagra!  Well you gotta cover that.  I mean - that's basic healthcare!

Maybe because all the old geezers in Washington need it.

Nobody in my circle of "r's" thinks like this. In fact most of us think along the lines that with all the means of birth control; we should have "cured Abortion" by now. There are a couple in my veteran groups who have their head in the sand about their teenage daughters with the belief that if they hold off on birth control; it'll make the daughters pause on the act. I usually tell them I had five sisters raised as Catholics - let me know how that works for you.

I've really got to stop getting such pleasure out of placing a fucked up look on people's face.

I went to a catholic all boys high school.  The biology teacher (one of the few laypeople) was still quite the Bible thumper.  And when it came time to cover birth control (as he was required to do) he gave a speech along the lines of "Look, I could tell you all about birth control.  IUD this and IUD that.  But it doesn't work, a lot of the time, especially if you use it wrong, like most people do.  And it just tempts people to have sex!  Well, there's one way to avoid getting someone pregnant and it's real simple - DON'T DO IT!  I bet even you're not going to be able to screw that up."

Needless to say he had a somewhat adversarial relationship with his students.

I was in the Catholic system until the 4th grade when even my parents recognized that my knuckles didn't look right. Then the deal was that as soon as I was confirmed I could go my own way. I learned a lot about religion, I'll give the sisters that much.

Here in Papua New Guinea, the government closed down all the "bottle shops" (liquor stores) on weekends due to people acting irresponsibly while under the influence.  Alcohol could still be purchased in a restaurant, as long as the patron ordered it with food.  In the face of the current massive violent surge they closed them all entirely (except the aforementioned restaurant-with-meal exemption).  Couple lack of the local beer with a downturn in the economy, it was suggested by an Australian colleague that the National Department of Health should offer 100 kina (approx $30 USD) and a "case of stubbies" (local short-bottle beer). They'd have no problem getting people tested and vaccinated under those conditions!

For the holdouts, anti-vaxxers and those just too lazy. It's soon to be raining Ben Franklin's in Ca.

California offering cash awards totaling $116.5M to get vaccinated

"In drawings held June 4 and June 11, 30 residents will be selected for “$50,000 Fridays” cash prizes. The next 2 million people who get vaccinated beginning May 27 will be automatically eligible for $50 gift cards for online shopping or groceries.

Californians who have received the vaccine are already entered for the cash prizes."

Yeah, this is good.  I wonder about those incentive programs -- how are we rewarding the citizens who respect science and their community and got vaccinated early?

Giving the same chances of winning to those folks seems fair to me.

Aside -- as of today, I'm considered fully vaccinated!  Two weeks ago was Dose 2 of Pfizer.  Definitely a huge weight off my mind as I live in a hotbed of transmission where apathy abounds and government communication is ineffective.  I had to give my housekeeper a brochure we had delivered to the embassy that explains what the vaccine does, its safety, and where to go online to search for vaccination locations.  She didn't know what I was talking about when I asked her if she had taken her first dose of vaccine against COVID.  Maybe I'll offer her some stubbies for providing a vaccination card!

I think one of the possibilities of problems with anti-vaxxers might be their fear of injection.  I've known several adults who, when approached with a needle turn into 3 year olds.

This is a case for "suck it up, cupcake."

My brother can't deal well with having blood taken; even as an adult, he nearly passes out. Shots are only marginally better. But he went right down and took the shot as soon as he was eligible.

On my wife's first shot, she didn't even feel the needle.   She didn't even know that she was done.   I barely felt it on mine.

For some reason, my mind simply does not understand the need to incentivize someone to protect their fellow man. Are we going to create an attitude of, "Well, I'm going to wait and see what they'll give me."

Agreed.

- 1 in 50 chance of dying from catching a disease; "Meh, I'll pass."

- 1 in 3 chance of long-term health issues from catching a disease; "Meh, I'll pass."

- 1 in 1,000,000 chance of winning a lottery; "Where do I sign up???"

As ever we are going at it ass backwards. We need simple advantages conferred on those smart enough, or brave enough, to get a painless shot. Vaccine passports with the ability to board aircraft, dine out, take an Uber, go to the Opera. No, on second thought we should send those jabronis who wont get vaccinated to the Opera but you get my point.

Rox says injections sting because many nurses and MAs put too much alcohol on prior.
