More sacrifices to the 2nd Amendment

Purchased his weapon legally.

Of course he did. Why wouldn't he? Most likely the next mass shooter, probably later today is at the store buying supplies for killing right now. It's a free for all folks. The government has no business restricting people from owning the tools of war just because some men go off the deep end unpredictably. The chances that you or someone you love will be the victim are still pretty low so why the hell would anyone willingly give up the freedom to own these shiny magically wonderfully powerful toys?

Way too much negativity in this thread. So America had the misfortune to be created by a constitution authored by those who just don't trust government. Hence armed citizens everywhere. Hence checks and balances that hog-tie government. it could be worse.

They could be Uyghurs like those in China. Sent to reeducation camps and forced labor camps. Could be Ukrainians at war with a madman....Oh hell i got nothing.

No shit.

Governor Pritzker & Sen Duckworth both held press conferences. It's been at the top of the national headlines for a couple days.

Six dead in Englewood or South Shore wouldn't even be top 3 on WGN at 9pm.

Meanwhile, back to Ulvade, Texas has acted with dispatch and conviction to address the problem of school mass shootings. They are bravely spending $50 Million dollars on bullet proof shields for their brave police so they can be even more brave, hopefully, at the next school shooting. Problem solved.

No hellhole, but a place that's doubling down on doing the same thing, and expecting a different result.

Eventually enough people may figure out that there aren't, in fact, a bunch of super human prescient good guys with guns running around.

This young lady was at Highland Park. Yes, we are a hellhole. Worse, we're a war zone. God Bless our Second Amendment.

At this point, from the outside, the US is looking more and more irredeemably broken.

What is so mystifying is that at least half the country doesn't seem to be aware that they are throwing a lot of the principles the country was founded upon away.

What REALLY worries me is that other governments in places where I DO live or spend time (or oppositions, depending on the country) are starting to use the activities in the US as a template to strangle democracy.

It's well under half.

The way the Rs have very effectively manipulated the system to the point where their clear minority can exert as much power and control as it does is both disgusting and frightening.

Fun fact: The conservative majority on the Supreme Court consists of 5 justices appointed by presidents who LOST the popular vote when they were elected.

The solution isn't simple but it is obvious. As a society, we need to ban all assault style weapons and make possession subject to very serious penalties because we need to stop fabulizing their ownership.  We need to stop local school control, because the boards are too often foolish and misdirected, and create a national standards system paid for with national tax dollars. We need to provide lunches, basic medical care and psychological care at every school. Teachers need to be paid more and held to high standards and accountability. That means the unions need to give something. Summers off for 3 months must end and school uniforms should be on the table. Child care needs to be a national priority. But mostly we need to quit believing we are teaching parents and go full focus on taking care of kids. Not just by educating them but by helping them to be well adjusted and ready to enter adulthood and society. Until we do that we should expect nothing less than we now expect every day.

How about the New Zealand approach of banning publishing the names of school shooters. The drop in notoriety might reduce the numbers of "inspired" angry, young men.

A society can be measured by the way it utilizes its angry young men.

Mr. Poutine is currently using his angry young men to shoot up the Ukrainian landscape while American angry young men are shooting up schools, parades, churches, shopping malls.

Canada just experienced a - rare - armed bank robbery by a pair of angry young men. Police in Saanich, British Columbia (near Victoria) killed both on scene.

Reports "one Canadian criminologist says it appears the brothers were prepared for and perhaps "actively seeking" some kind of shootout....Isaac Auchterlonie's Instagram account, which has since been deleted, was full of gun photos, war references and video of him and his brother in camouflage shooting rifles in the forest. ...Police have said the suspects were armed and were believed to have been wearing body armour...

"They were waiting for something. Pacing quietly, like a country walk," she said.

Fryer said she was left alone for five to 10 minutes inside the office. During that time, she pulled out her cellphone and called 911.

"Why were [the suspects] waiting? What were they doing?" she wondered. "They could have taken the money and gone."

It seems as if the two wanted "suicide by cop" One wanted to join the Canadian forces but failed an aptitude test.

No insult to Rob or other members of the CAF. But I was surprised they had such a test and wonder how you could fail it.

Military aptitude test.

Why do you want to join the military (check all that apply)?

1.  Travel to other countries.  (X)

2.  Meet interesting people.  (X)

3.  Kill them.   (XX)

Canadian military:

1. Prepared to use old outdated equipment. Or fix it.

2. Prepared to travel on old unreliable A/C.

3. Prepared to watch other NATO allies go to danger areas.

4. Prepared to be politically correct in all occasions. Unless you're a general/admiral in Ottawa. Then pussy grabbing ok.

Well, since the standard 'thoughts and prayers' are not working, the alt-right has decided to up the ante.

New laws?
Better mental health care?

ANYTHING even remotely based on reality?

Don't be silly. I'm talking about Fox Garbage Network (it's not 'news')

They suggest exorcisms.

No clue who they plan on doing it to, how they plan on identifying them or any of the zillion other questions that arise from this idiocy, but apparently this fool is serious:

Personally, the scariest part about the whole story is that the guy suggesting this was Secretary of EDUCATION under Bush 1.
