Judge Arthur Engoron has set closing arguments in Trump's civil fraud trial for January 11th, 2024 at 10 AM EST.

 

This is the one he's already been found liable for? The judge just needs to decide the value of his penalties?

It's a challenge to keep up with a felony criminal defendant in multiple cases with 91 felony charges.

In a new court filing, prosecutors working for special counsel Jack Smith went further than in their August indictment in attempting to tie him to that day’s violence, saying they intended to introduce evidence of his other acts both before the November 2020 presidential election and subsequent alleged threats to establish his motive, intent and preparation for subverting its legitimate results.

 Judge Tanya  Chutkan on Friday issued a stunning rebuke to Trump, rejecting his motion to dismiss his Jan. 6, 2021, charges on absolute immunity and other specious constitutional grounds. The ruling came just hours after an appellate court rejected Trump’s immunity claim in a parallel civil case.

 In dispensing with Trump’s criminal immunity claim, Chutkan held emphatically, “The Constitution’s text, structure, and history do not support that contention. No court — or any other branch of government — has ever accepted it. And this court will not so hold. Whatever immunities a sitting President may enjoy, the United States has only one Chief Executive at a time, and that position does not confer a lifelong ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ pass.” She added, “Former Presidents enjoy no special conditions on their federal criminal liability. Defendant may be subject to federal investigation, indictment, prosecution, conviction, and punishment for any criminal acts undertaken while in office.”

Today Trump loses twice.

First off he lost his bid to get rid of the gag order, so he can more freely threaten the families of the clerks in the courtroom of his trial.  Per the appellate court, "the Gag Order is narrow, limited to prohibiting solely statements regarding the court's staff" and thus does not unduly limit his right to speak his mind.

He also lost his attempt to block the second defamation trial for the woman he raped.  Trump argued that he had "presidential immunity" from any civil lawsuit.  The appeals court was not amused by his attempt to escape culpability.

The second one is particularly sad in that Trump had ALREADY been found guilty of sexual assault and slander, and he immediately strutted onto a nearby stage and claimed (again) that he never met her and she was a liar.  Given that there is now a legal decision that he did in fact rape her, she will have an open-and-shut case for the second trial.

And all he had to do to completely avoid both cases was to keep his mouth shut.

A jury in Washington, D.C., has ordered  Rudy Giuliani to pay $148 million to two former Georgia election workers who became the targets of violent threats after he accused them of manipulating ballots in the 2020 election.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell determined that Giuliani was liable for defamation and that he had engaged in a conspiracy to defame Ruby Freeman and daughter Shaye Moss.

His legal team made one fatal mistake: "If the jury awards Freeman and Moss what they are seeking, his lawyer, Joseph Sibley said, it "will be the end of Mr. Giuliani.""
