Donald Trump’s onslaught of falsehoods about the November election misled millions of Americans, undermined faith in the electoral system, sparked a deadly riot — and has now left taxpayers with a large, and growing, bill.

The total so far: $519 million.

Interesting note from Heather Cox Richardson today

The House passed this article of impeachment with 232 representatives voting yes and 197 voting no. Ten Republicans joined 222 Democrats to impeach Trump in his last days in office. The Senate will hold a trial to determine whether to convict the former president of this charge. If all 100 senators are present, the number needed to convict is seventeen. But there is no requirement that all senators be present.

Pundits are basing their belief that senators will vote to acquit on the fact that 45 Republican senators voted against a motion proposed by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), calling for a debate over the constitutionality of trying a former president. Paul insisted that vote was a proxy for conviction, but a vote immediately after that one, on the structure for the trial, drew only 17 no votes from Republicans. Thirty-three voted yes. My guess is that neither vote is a definitive sign of what is to come.

OAN Parent Co. Ordered To Pay $250,000 To Rachel Maddow, MSNBC For Failed Lawsuit

OAN’s parent Herring Networks accused Maddow in a 2019 suit of defaming the operation by discussing a report that an OAN journalist was also a contributor to Sputnik, a Russian state-owned news outlet. Maddow said that OAN “literally is paid Russian propaganda.” Herring demanded $10 million in damages.

The 'funny' part is that I can totally see this happening.

R Senators could simply make a cheesy excuse, miss the vote at the end of the trial, and 'escape' the consequences of either voting to convict (alienating Trumpettes) or to acquit (alienatiing everone else).

The more I think about it, the more it seems like the most likely thing to happen:

GOP senators announce they are boycotting the "unconstitutional" impeachment trial, ensuring a conviction, while their clueless base applauds them for "standing up to the libs".

How many would vote to convict if it was a secret ballot?

This many:

"Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the No. 3 Republican, fended off a challenge from her conference’s right flank to strip her of her leadership position in a secret ballot vote held late Wednesday night after she voted to impeach Donald J. Trump last month.

The lopsided vote, 145 to 61, according to two people familiar with the results, showed that even as a majority of House Republicans opposed impeaching Mr. Trump, most were not prepared to punish one of their top leaders for doing so — at least not under a blanket of anonymity. It amounted to both a victory for Ms. Cheney, who refused to apologize for voting to impeach Mr. Trump,"

I was thinking about that a couple days ago when Cheney survived the vote to oust her from the house leadership, which was a secret ballot

ETA: And I see Phil1111 beat me to the post.

A GOP donor gave $2.5 million for a voter fraud investigation. Now he wants his money back.

NAACP sues Trump and Giuliani after Jan. 6 riots

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday morning in Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that Trump and Giuliani, in collaboration with the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, conspired to incite the riots to keep Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. It claims they did so in violation of the Ku Klux Klan Act, a Reconstruction-era statute designed to protect both formerly enslaved African Americans and lawmakers in Congress from white supremacist violence.

Good.  There will be discovery and depositions under oath, unlike the Senate hearing with a captive jury.

So Trump is going to be trying to defend himself against laws put in place to  . . . stop the KKK.  Fitting.

The GA Republicans are trying to change the rules for grand juries, so that all counties can participate in the Fulton County action.  Likely that if they succeed, the grand jury impanelled will not find any crimes to charge.
