That's unfortunate.  They should be able to declare bankruptcy like anyone else.

Or go to school in a country that believes prosperity arises from an educated workforce. Free or under $1000 euro a year are abundant. But they have two big drawbacks. They are GOP and FOX news free.

Hi folks,

Re:  Student Loans & Re-payment

Let us not forget that a LOT of these student loans are from, what I call, bogus/sham schools.  The ones that seem to advertise a lot on tv; usually ads that seem to be directed at people of low income & who probably would never consider a formal education.

I cannot remember when I last saw an ad on tv for Oregon State University and/or the University of Oregon. *

* Nor my alma mater, the University of Portland.

The Obama administration enacted a set of rules to stamp out the for-profit schools scam. Trump/DeVos threw them out. Biden administration (as of the date of this story) has not re-instated them.

Hi Robert,

From your link:  some companies put more effort into the pursuit of federal student-aid money than into teaching or learning

IMO this is the crux of the problem.

That is the problem. It is not the lack of government support, but the abundance of it.

NYT, May 2:
"The pay gap between college graduates and everybody else is near a record high. More educated Americans are more likely to be in stable relationships and to be happy with their lives and less likely to suffer from loneliness, chronic pain and alcohol and drug abuse.

These differences have long existed, but they have widened significantly in recent decades, as the economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton documented in their 2020 book 'Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism'.”

Better educated citizens will contribute more to society in general, and specifically in the taxes that pay for education.  The poorly educated are more likely to vote for a populist blow-hard con-man while contributing little in taxes.

The poorly educated are more likely to believe conspiracy theories that immigrants are stealing what little they have. That immigrants are ruining America and that the only reason they come to America is to freeload.

That whites are losing the race wars. That MSM and the deep state has it out for them.

Why can many European countries have free university? Free health care? Yet still compete with America. Are Americans lazy, stupid, or just beholden to the GOP?

GOP? The Ds have the House the Senate AND the Executive.  The GOP is irrelevant (for now)

And the GOP is blocking every single thing it can via its filibusters.

Your claim is like saying walls can't stop anyone from walking anywhere they want, because they're in charge of their feet.

Except for that little filibuster thing. But of course you'll have some sort of reason why their ability to prevent anything substantive from coming to a vote is irrelevant.

Wendy P.

All of the big ticket items such as Build Back Better can be passed via reconciliation, no GOP votes required.

OTOH, if a bipartisan majority think BBB is bad legislation perhaps it should not pass.  Your thoughts?

So you are saying walls work at preventing folks from going where they want…say the United States for example?

Record gas prices, highest inflation in a generation, out of control border, crashing stock market, COVID on the rise, GDP on the decline, crime waves sweeping the country, baby formula shortage, backsliding in the Middle East…who still thinks Brandon is doing a great job?

Arguments for all of these, but let's for instance take the baby formula shortage. Trump's USMCA makes it near impossible to import baby formula from Canada. Turns out America First isn't that great when you have a monopoly churning out poisoned baby formula.

But no worries, they will be allowed to start producing again soon, without making any changes.

Even when you cherry-pick the easiest one, you fail.

“the CDC said its investigation did not find a link between Abbott formulas and infant illnesses.”

I mean you provide such a strong source. But the actual inspections did show there are some issues that had to get addressed:

https://www.fda.gov/media/157073/download (pdf) specifically related to the type of bacteria that caused the illness.

In the mean time, Canada could have provided formula, while Abbott was sorting out there issues, but Trump's USMCA doesn't allow it.

But, please do explain how Biden is responsible for Abbott recalling their product and Trump legislation that stopped formula imports from Canada.

“The decision to reopen the facility came after the CDC said its investigation did not find a link between Abbott formulas and infant illnesses.”

Please provide evidence of your claim, “you have a monopoly churning out poisoned baby formula.”

“Getting imports into the U.S. supply chain will also take several weeks, according to administration officials. Products from Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. are expected to meet the standards needed for importation.”

Looks like our flappy headed cousins from the north didn’t make the cut.

Great, so all is good then! Exactly how is this Biden's fault?

I do. Besides being happy with our strengthened NATO alliance and how he's handling the war in Ukraine I am totally thrilled that he is occupying the Oval Office and not Trump. Even if I were to concede he's made some domestic policy errors just knowing that it's mere incompetence not rank criminality as the root cause makes me happy.

You just said there was no problem, so exactly what problem are you blaming Biden for?

the CDC did find problems in the plant. Are you upset an infant formula producer would have to be inspected?

They had three months to deal the non-problem they created. (The issues at the plant did not involve the production line) They shut down 40% of domestic production and did nothing to address the shortfall until it hit the news cycle.  It’s just another example of the regulatory state run amuck.

From the actual inspection reports I linked to:

"...both FDA and your firm found evidence of Cronobacter spp. in your powdered infant formula production environment. Your firm also identified Cronobacter spp. in finished powdered infant formula products."
