Well, there goes my hope of jerking off to the obituary.

I was going to state that reading the entire letter reminded me of the last scene of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" but I won't state it...you got this one hands down!B|B|B|

I too will buy you a beer of your choice!

What a wonderful out come!!! I'm so glad to read about the "damage" those nut jobs will be dealing with. I am VERY thrilled for your positive outcome.

It has been a pleasure reading this thread...the best part being what I read today!!

I was a DZO for five years beginning in the 1960s. My problems with DZ "neighbors" wasn't noise it was landing in someone's backyard during a cook out. Everyone was jumping modified military gear with hot canopies like a double L and 7 TU modifications. Putting students out so they could hit the dropzone was always a challenge.

After moving five times we finally found a home. [Being a DZO is not easy.]

Again...It's really great reading about a positive outcome for you guys...and our sport. I am thrilled for you!!!

Well here's another one:

This raving rectum has the temerity of stating he's living in a "war zone."

I've been in and seen a war zone, this asshole has no clue.

Let's not overlook this author's marvelous observation "I have now counted five planes passing in the past half-hour alone"

Sounds like they are complaining about MANY airport users. Unless of course MHS is having a multi-plane boogie.

Then of course the local news piece today was that some hillbilly shot his neighbor in the face for "mowing her small lawn too late", so what the hell do I know, I suppose everyone has different triggers.

Thanks for your service.

One thing to point out to folks that would be noise complainers is that many skydivers are former military and served our country well. Let them have some fun. It's the least we can do.

I live near a DZ too. Lived here for six years before starting to jump and never once was bothered by the noise. Pilots are courteous enough to fly a little north of the town and get high after that.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Given her recent statements, she clearly is a narcissist who thinks she is always right, and what she wants is the only things that matters. This is likely encouraged and reinforced by her family/friends. She will not stop which will prove costly to friends and family around her. I think that $100,000 bill is only starting.

If I were Mile-Hi, I would pursue re-payment of the $100,000 very aggressively. I'd allocate half to her, and divide the rest among the people involved in the appeal. If people drop out of the appeal then allocation their portion to Ms. Gibbs.

I don't think she stops until the expense of this forces those around her to quite/leave/stop enabling her. Only when her enablers are gone will she not have the ability to continue. My prediction is an few years she moves away(finds some others that enable her behavior), and then starts to harass someone else in the new place she lives.

I hope some point to stop by Mile-Hi and jump there. just to show some support for you guys.

Kimberly Gibbs: Time has come for sensible noise regulations
By Kimberly Gibbs
POSTED: 08/01/2015 07:16:50 AM MDT

The recent guest opinion (Lewis/Slayter opinion 7/26/2015) touting the positive economic benefits of the Vance Brand Airport was aimed at rallying support for efforts to increase airport operations. The authors claim that further benefits will result from "implementation of the Airport Master Plan," a veiled reference to the airport expansion, and particularly the runway extension that city council unanimously approved in 2012.

While you ponder the economic benefits provided as justification, consider the undeniable consequences of airport expansion: more aircraft, more flights, more touch-and-goes, more nighttime flights, more noise and more pollution.

In exchange for your tacit approval for airport expansion, the authors, on behalf of the city, promise to "continue working to address noise concerns." Their efforts will include 1) encouraging commercial instead of residential development near the airport, 2) encouraging compliance with the voluntary noise abatement procedures (VNAP) and 3) asking the FAA to enlarge or modify the skydiving "flight box."

These promises are distractions, not solutions. What steps have been taken so far? None. In fact, noise from skydiving operations has increased since the recent lawsuit ruling in Mile-Hi's favor. How would future commercial development help the people who are already subjected to the constant droning of the jump planes? Regarding the VNAP, there is no enforcement, no fines and no accountability for pilots who choose not to follow them. Consider that Mile-Hi Skydiving owner, Frank Casares, testified under oath that Mile-Hi pilots consistently follow the noise abatement procedures. Finally, expanding the flight box will only subject more people to the noise and allow more jump planes to operate concurrently.

So, what can be done to address noise concerns? Aviation attorney John Putnam presented a lecture in Longmont recently on this topic. The airport receives Airport Improvement Program (AIP) federal grants in exchange for assurances to keep the airport open to all aeronautical users on reasonable terms. The grant assurances limit the operator's ability to adopt regulations to reduce noise.

Mr. Putnam stated that "[Grant assurance 22a] does acknowledge that airports can make reasonable rules governing the access to that airport. However, the key piece is that it has to be reasonable." He also noted that a Part 150 noise study is voluntary and not required as a prerequisite for imposing local noise or access restrictions. Mr. Putnam further explained that, in practice, the FAA deems all restrictions to be unreasonable, so it is difficult to justify regulations aimed at reducing noise.

Can airports survive without the federal grants? Yes, according to Mr. Putnam, and real-world examples include East Hampton, N.Y., and Santa Monica, Calif. Since 1982, the city has accepted about $4.7 million in AIP grants. That's an average of $204,347 per year - a modest sum that could be collected through airport user fees.

Who is really benefitting from the airport? On summer weekends, Mile-Hi Skydiving accounts for nearly 70 percent of operations. Pilot training and touch-and-goes account for another sizable chunk of traffic. Clearly, the airport users are the ones benefitting from the airport and they should pay their fair share for its maintenance, instead of relying on federal taxpayer subsidies that prohibit local control.

You are being asked to surrender your rights to accommodate aviation interests - don't allow the soothing promises to lull you into complacency. Remind city officials that the people who live here - both city and county residents who spend their hard-earned dollars in Longmont - are the lifeblood of the community and a high quality of life is worth taking a stand. Would you allow a Longmont business to poison the water or foul the air? No, you would demand regulations to protect the health and well being of its citizens.

The time has come for the city to adopt sensible and mandatory regulations to address community noise concerns. Otherwise, the solution will be to disentangle the airport from the onerous demands of the FAA grant assurances in order to restore local control over airport operations.

If she really wants to improve the world, she could make a Gunbarrel a resident of her mouth temporarily.

Loopier than a Red Bull Air Race, this one is.

Not funny, humorous, nor cool at any level. >:(

Brother, I hope you uttered those words out of and abundance of frustration, coupled with being well into your cups. Regardless, the comment was way out of bounds.

I am no supporter of Ms. Gibbs, and have but contempt for those who complain after moving next to an airport or racing circuit... let alone one who apparently lives so far away. Sadly, your transgression exceeds hers, at least in the realm of the things of the soul.

How should we deal with our adversaries? I'm not a complete stranger to the perverse sense of satisfaction that comes from prevailing in the arena of armed conflict, and I make no apologies for such satisfaction. Perhaps that is because the opponents were worthy of the result... My very real regrets stem from my own inappropriate responses, be they too much, or too little. Yours are FAR too much.

We can rejoice in the current outcome of the conflict with Ms. Gibbs, but your jibe is offensive to all but the most jaded / blinded of souls.

I don't intend to insult or beat you up, but I hope you sober up and offer an apology to both Ms. Gibbs, and to the skydiving community.

If any skydivers are offended by that, I apologise to them. She, on the other hand, can stay offended.

Once again, the self appointed Oracle of Gunbarrel hath spoken and once again, she reveals her hand. The argument against airport expansion comes back over and over to MHS. She can't let it go and she's already on the hook for $115K. She keeps this up, she's not going to have any seed money to begin selling roses on the street corner once she's homeless.

I'm a county network engineer and I guess I work for a different county. B|

Also, someone commented on her facebook post and linked to this similar sounding site (though not directed towards skydiving): Clicky

Their webpage Clicky states this:
Quote

Our towns are affected by increased airplane noise due to the implementation of RNAV (using GPS) "Highways in the Sky" in June of 2013. This means that EVERY single airplane departing from 33L on days with NW winds continues on Virtual Runway 33L which splits into four narrow paths over specific neighborhoods.

Victor airways were/are highways in the sky, much moreso than RNAV. RNAV gives you better ability for direct routing which means that it's possible for less planes to fly a given path if they're not going/coming to/from the same airports.

Sounds like they're talking about a departure procedure, which is used to keep traffic flowing in an orderly fashion until they get to their transition point. There seems to be one departure procedure that is not RNAV, but it's very likely that there were more before the RNAV were implemented. Given the busy airspace in that area, they're probably using the DPs quite often.

Unfortunately for aviation and skydiving there are plenty of these loons out there and with social media, they're finding easy ways to communicate. Though it doesn't sound like common sense is being utilized and when one fails, the others think they will be different.

The FAA told those guys not to build neighborhoods there. They heard the FAA saying "AAh! Aaah!" They saw the FAA looking at them. They did it anyway. I've been hanging out out at the Broomfield airport a lot since I started working in Broomfield, and on the flight path there's not a goddamn house to be seen for miles! One the one, you can see all the way to the mountains! What was allowed to happen in Longmont was just piss poor planning. But then, a lot of things in Longmont are. Like the traffic situation where you can often not turn left. There are times when you are literally incapable of turning left in Longmont! But you know, I just got gigabit fiber in, so I'm not going to complain too loud. I might not be able to turn left out of my house, but I have a goddamn firehose of porn to drink from on the days when I'm stuck at home! At least until the power goes out. Next on my to-do list after a wingsuit upgrade is dropping a standby generator in here.
I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
