The Skydiving History & Trivia Thread Has Been Hijacked

Recommended Posts

The DB Cooper thread has become a cesspool.  One spammer keeps posting porn.  That thread has become an embarrassment to skydivers.  Posters on there can post other places on the web, they don't need the DZ anymore if it is going to be how it is now.  If the spammers can't be controlled, then it should be shut down and archived.

I read it regularly back when it was actually generating valid info.

Then the 'smart people' all gave up.

Then it got locked.

When it was reopened, I tried reading it again.
But it turned into a shouting match between one or two posters, plus one idiot who claimed he knew who it was, kept posting pics of that 'suspect', but no actual evidence that he could possibly be Cooper.
He got banned, and kept coming back with sockpuppets, posting pics. They kept getting deleted.
I'll guess he's the idiot posting porn.

I'd be fine with it getting locked up again. There actually is a lot of valid info in it, but it's at the beginning (or in the original thread) and buried among a ton of garbage.

The Cooper thread was allowed back in as an attempt to regain lost usership and generate traffic to the site. Why it got put under Skydiving History & Trivia is beyond me. It is neither. It should have it's own forum to make it easier to ignore.

...Anything about the D B Cooper skyjacking has nothing to do with skydiving.

Hi Jerry,

It was an intentional parachute jump from an airplane. The FAA would call that 'skydiving' (and issue a citation for jumping without a functional reserve ;P)

The original premise was that a woman was asking jumpers if anyone could 'put her dead husband in a parachute', that is, could anyone confirm her idea that her husband knew how to skydive.

Nobody could, and it turned out that the idea was completely bonkers. She was 'more than a little' obsessive about it.

But there was a period of time where the thread generated a hell of a lot of decent, valid info.

It never got anyone any closer to finding out who Cooper really was or what happened to him, but a lot of myths were proven wrong and a few new facts were uncovered.
That doesn't mean there wasn't an incredible amount of garbage, some very inappropriate actions by a few folks, and a ton of false info.
Enough folks decided that they were going to do whatever it took to make 'their suspect' the one, including making shit up and trashing anyone who disagreed that I finally gave up reading it.

But it was fun for a while.
