Guest #1 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) Roscosmos beefs about US okaying commercial exploitation of extraterrestrial resources - https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-russia-space/russian-space-agency-says-trump-paving-way-to-seize-other-planets-idUSKBN21P1SY I call BS on this. The Space Treaty of 1967 (signed by the US and the USSR, but has the Russian Federation signed it, or was it grandfathered by the Duma along with all the other treaties the Soviets were party to?) says -- "the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind; outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States; outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means..." Not sure how mining is "seizing other planets". SC pigeons, feel free to poop on 45 over this. You will anyway, but before you do, read HR 2262, signed into law by Obama in 2015, okaying this. https://www.planetaryresources.com/2015/11/president-obama-signs-bill-recognizing-asteroid-resource-property-rights-into-law/ See also https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/2262/text My guess is the Russians know they don't have a chance of doing anything like space mining (they just can't afford it), whereas private industry in the US could actually bring it about if it were economically worth the costs and the risks. No need to send a man to do a robot's job, but what would happen if asteroids are found to contain worthwhile amounts of precious metals or rare earths? DougH 270 #3 April 7, 2020 What does Mars and the Belters have to say about this?

DougH 270 #5 April 8, 2020 Mine as well, I am patiently waiting for the next Novel to come out. And have resorted to re-reading the earlier books and a number of the little offshoot novelas.

"Mars made no comment, while Outer Planets Alliance spokesman Fred Johnson replied with some incomprehensible kind of Belter patois/dialect which no one from Earth could understand, presumably because the words were jumbled around some. We're not exactly sure what he said but it was something along the lines of 'Earthers better not try that.'" :-D Edited April 8, 2020 by Guest
