Coronavirus hall of shame (by state)

Recommended Posts

When you look at the progression of coronavirus based on estimates, the difference between 0% and 50% shelter-in-place is almost unnoticeable; it spreads almost as fast.  But between 70% and 90% is a huge difference - the peak is almost 4x less.  Which means that close to 100% compliance really is critical to stopping this.  Note that if you do a really, really good job of sheltering in place you are at about 90%, because there will still be delivery drivers, infrequent shopping trips and EMS services that will be out and about.  Which means that everyone else has to stay in place to have the effect we want.

Which is one of the reasons it's frustrating to see spring breakers partying on the beach, saying things like "yeah, Corona might get me, but I'm going to party until that happens.  I'm young so I'll be OK."

It's also frustrating to see states not enact restrictions  If 80% of the states enact restrictions, then we get back to the 70% vs 90% issue again - the free-movement states keep the infection rates high, and that spills over into even the areas where people are being good about staying at home.

As of today, 6 states have no restrictions on people's movements (though many have 'suggestions') and 12 have only partial restrictions, like on one city or a few counties.  This in some ways is even worse, because you ensure the virus has fertile ground outside the hardest-hit areas, ensuring that they too will soon become hard hit areas.

With that in mind I present the State Hall of Shame:

Arkansas is still not locked down.  The governor says "I do not want to go to a shelter-in-place environment."  Meanwhile 500 cases and 7 deaths.

Florida is only locked down for some cities.  5700 cases, 71 deaths - and STILL we see pictures of Spring Breakers partying on the beaches.

Iowa is not locked down at all.  The governor has made a "suggestion" that people stay home.  500 cases, 7 deaths.

Mississipi is another "suggestion" state.  900 cases, 20 deaths.

The governor of Nebrasks says there is "no need" for a stay-at-home order.  130 cases, 2 deaths so far.

North Dakota has no order in place.  Governor says "It’s not about staying home, it’s about avoiding contact" which is super misleading.  "Hey, I was just at an outdoor party; I wasn't in contact with anyone!"  120 cases, 3 deaths.

Pennsylvania has a stay-at-home order only for the "hardest hit areas."  Which means that it's spreading into the less harder hit areas now.  5000 cases, 63 deaths.

Utah has shut down Salt Lake City only.

Wyoming.  95 cases, 1 death.  But since the governor "doesn’t plan to order residents to stay at home" that number will climb rapidly.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro    " Despite confirmed cases of COVID-19 almost tripling in seven days to 4,256 by Saturday, Bolsonaro has continued to deny the gravity of the disease, calling it “a small cold” that would kill only old people. The diseases has caused 136 deaths in Brazil so far, and more than 30,000 globally. ..

On Friday, Bolsonaro cast doubt on the state of Sao Paulo’s official death toll from the outbreak, the highest in the country, accusing the governor of manipulating the numbers for political ends.

“I’m sorry, some people will die, they will die, that’s life,” Bolsonaro said in a television interview.

The “Brazil can’t stop” social media campaign, suggesting to most Brazilians that there was no need for isolating themselves at home, was banned by Judge Laura Bastos in Rio de Janeiro at the request of federal prosecutors."

He is a lite version of trump and is leading Brazil into disaster.

Looking up the states in BV's post:

STATE - GOVERNOR - PARTY

AR - Asa Hutchinson - GOP

FL - Ron DeSantis - GOP

IA - Kim Reynolds - GOP

MS - Tate Reeves - GOP

ND - Doug Burgum - GOP

PA - Tom Wolf - Democrat

UT - Gary Herbert - GOP

WY - Mark Gordon - GOP

I'm shocked!

In Manitoba, a province with only 100 cases and no known community spread yet, we have closed down non essential businesses and mostly seem to be taking social distancing pretty seriously. We have it relatively easy so far and seem to be pretty focused on keeping it that way. This is 100% the result of effective leadership. Canadians are not very different from Americans. But we surely have leaders who are doing a better job.

Its not trump's fault after all.

Kentucky   "Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says President Donald Trump's impeachment trial distracted the federal government from the novel coronavirus as it reached the United States in January, despite warnings at the time from public health experts and members of Congress about the spread of the virus.

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday that the deadly virus "came up while we were tied down on the impeachment trial. And I think it diverted the attention of the government, because everything every day was all about impeachment.''

Kentucky and McConnell believe in accountability "

Groovy. And the Privileges and Immunities Clause will enable all of those folks to travel to any other state to start the cycle anew. That's how it works, right?

I was listening to a government minister from Brazil talking about their “vertical quarantine,” and while it’s risky, it’s not as idiotic as it sounds. The thought is to very thoroughly isolate the seniors and other vulnerable people, but let it take its course with the younger population, so that a semblance of herd immunity is built up as quickly as possible.
Risky because young people get sick too, but herd immunity does help.

Ummmm.....That actually makes it even more Trump's fault.

Bolsonaro said old people will die and death is a part of life.

“I’m sorry, some people will die, they will die, that’s life,” Bolsonaro said in a television interview on Friday night. “You can’t stop a car factory because of traffic deaths.”

Oh understood. Most of my friends there were in school with me, and I was always the youngest in my class, so, well, they're all seniors too.

Bolsonaro is 65, so hopefully he will catch it ASAP.

Can't. The border is closed to all non essential traffic. I can get through with a truck load of recycle paper, but no one needs politicians.

I don't know. Us getting some even marginally better ones is pretty essential, I think. On the other hand, we'd never vote for them, so it's probably just a waste of resources.

There are still so many unknowns give how 'new' this virus is.

Infections disease specialist Professor David Heymann, who is chairing a WHO panel, says:-

"We don't know yet in the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 whether or not that coronavirus does cause long-lasting immunity and therefore we can't make too many assumptions,"

Oh absolutely. They're shooting in the dark, but at least they have a target that's a little better than keeping Trump's ratings up. Of course, the secondary target in Brazil is keeping Bolsonaro's numbers up.

Exactly!  It's an overreaction.  It would be like going to war because a mere 2400 people were killed in Hawaii by a foreign power.  More people than that are killed by the flu every year!

Republican fundraiser started a PPE distribution company 2 weeks ago.

Federal government now controls the supply side.

Federal government ensuring States have to bid up on the demand side.

This isn’t about disaster management or stockpile management. This is about making money.
