This post is a part of a series on COVID-19 and the Coronavirus Pandemic

Just yesterday, we learned that the White House has held dozens of meetings on coronavirus that were considered “classified,” meaning that federal health officials, including experts, were unable to enter the room. Without experts in the room, how can we expect our government to follow the best available science on this rapidly developing issue and enact science-based policies that protect our health and safety during this pandemic?

When it comes to the novel coronavirus, it is imperative that the US government report robust scientific information about where the disease is spreading, how to control the spread of the disease, and who is most at risk of serious illness. People’s lives are literally on the line.

And yet when dealing with the impact of COVID-19 – a disease that will likely reach thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands, of people in the US alone – government officials are sometimes choosing to suppress or distort health data for political purposes. Let’s take a look at the ways that the Trump administration is trying to hoodwink the public, by trying to convince us that the escalating number of cases of COVID-19 is simply not occurring.

China is the scapegoat and the exclusion of health officials allows the talking points to be massaged for public consumption. Meanwhile his supporters distract by suggesting, correctly, that China is under-reporting its numbers.

China & Xi vrs trump & his enablers.   Little to separate either because the public interest was sold down the road long ago.

Probably that they are a lot like us.

No, worse. " US intelligence officials reportedly warned President Donald Trump and Congress about the threats posed by the novel coronavirus beginning in early January"  Better is expected of democratic government with the "best health care" systems "best prepared for pandemics". “I like this stuff. I really get it,” Mr Trump boasted to reporters during a tour of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention in Atlanta,. .Citing a “great, super-genius uncle” who taught at MIT, Mr Trump professed it must run in the family genes. “People are really surprised I understand this stuff,” he said. “Every one of these doctors said: ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability.”

I would expect the WHO to be a bit more independent.    From this...

Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network-GOARN

GOARN’s primary aims are to:

•Assist countries with disease control efforts by ensuring rapid and appropriate technical support to affected populations.

•Investigate and characterize events and assess risks of rapidly emerging epidemic disease threats.

•Support national outbreak preparedness by ensuring that responses contribute to sustained containment of epidemic threats.

More independent than just taking China's word that it wasn't spreading.

The WHO doesn't have funding to hire private spies to ensure member organizations are truthful. They have a mandate to address everything from disease, to poverty, to education regarding nutrition, contraception, etc.

I assume you know the CIA provides daily intelligence briefings for the president. That it would have advised the president in December 2019 about the spread of C-19 in China.

"WASHINGTON — Last month, well before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, a little-known unit within the Defense Intelligence Agency had already predicted that the outbreak would reach pandemic proportions.

The warning came from the National Center for Medical Intelligence, a senior defense official told NBC News. The NCMI, as it is known, is an obscure patch of the U.S. spying community that is now in the midst of one of the most important missions in its history. The warning was first reported by Newsweek.

Investigate and characterize events and assess risks of rapidly emerging epidemic disease threats.

So you guys think this is what happened?  I don't.

China’s deadly coronavirus-lie co-conspirator — the World Health Organization

The WHO should have known at the outset that it was dealing with a bad-faith actor in Beijing. Yet instead of immediately insisting upon access, openness and transparency from China, WHO leadership followed the Chinese lead and at times even took the Chinese line.

It's telling that you are so quick to point fingers and yet willing to turn a blind eye to the real problem.

Which they did.  That's how we found out about COVID-19.

It's telling that you are so quick to point fingers.

You think that the WHO didn't know that the Chinese gov't was lying?

What do you think would have happened if the WHO 'insisted' on those things?

Helpful hint: The Chinese have a nasty tendency to imprison or kill those that make the gov't look bad (you already knew this).

The WHO had the very difficult position of doing what they could, as well as they could, while not getting themselves and their local folks into trouble.

OTOH, here in the US we have Constitutional protections for speech and press.
The citizens and the press have the obligation to hold those in charge accountable.

Trump's actions have been so reprehensible, so irresponsible (of course, he said he's not responsible), so pathetic that NOT pointing fingers would be failing in those obligations...

Kinda like Fox "News" is doing.

I know you want this to be all about Trump.

1/14 WHO says Covid-19 is not contagious

1/30 WHO declares Public Health Emergency

3/11 WHO declares the outbreak a pandemic

Almost 2 months after they were aware that Covid-19 was in Wuhan?  Why would they wait?

Please.

Were you waiting to worry about it until the WHO declared the pandemic officially started? Maybe there are standards to call it an actual pandemic, as opposed to a "everyone this is getting serious" situation, which it clearly was by mid-February. By the end of February, I was busy changing flights at significant expense to avoid going through Korea, and Italy had closed down the Mardi Gras celebration in Venice.

It's a real-time situation, and a snapshot at any minute isn't accurate, and projections with that little information (which was the case in January) are kind of like the weather forecasts in Poor Richard's Almanac.

Because they're not clairvoyant? Seriously, what do you want from them?

When the Chinese were saying they didn't know if nCov was human-human transmissable how was the WHO supposed to know otherwise?

When the WHO were first made aware of a new disease in Wuhan how were they supposed to know it was going to become a PHEIC? You think they somehow knew this was coming, way back then, and simply decided not to bother fulfilling their role, the entire reason for their existence in the first place? Nevermind that they'd been warning that the global risk was high even when there were only a handful of cases in southeast asia outside of China.

Similarly, why would they declare it a pandemic before it actually was a pandemic? It absolutely doesn't mean they weren't making it clear how serious it was.

Honestly, what is your point here criticising the WHO for not stating things that they didn't actually know at the time? What would it have changed? Trump apparently didn't believe them and you certainly didn't believe them when they were warning how serious it would be with the facts they did have access to. Be serious for a moment, even if they did have a crystal ball and warned that this was coming back when Coronavirus was just a regional disease in China you would have been having a field day calling them all kinds of overhyped know-nothing fearmongers.

Holy dishonest reporting batman!  Actual WHO quotes/timeline:

Dec 31 - China reports first case to WHO.

Jan. 7 — China identifies novel coronavirus as cause of the outbreak.

Jan 15 - WHO: "According to the latest information we have, there is no clear evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission and there are no infections reported among health care workers.  The fact that some cases do not seem to be linked with the Huanan seafood market means we cannot exclude the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission."

Jan 15 - WHO: "It is not surprising that there are cases outside of China, and it is possible that there will be cases in other countries in the future.  @WHO encourages all countries to continue preparedness activities. We have issued interim guidance on how to do this."

Jan 20 - WHO: "it is now very clear from the latest information that there is at least some human-to-human transmission of #nCoV2019. Infections among health care workers strengthen the evidence for this."

The US administration was encouraged to prepare for this on Jan 15th - the same day the WHO said they "cannot exclude" the possibility it is contagious.  By Jan 20 they were clear - it was contagious.

Trump on Mar 10th, almost 2 months later: "It will go away."

Have you looked up the definition of a pandemic?

Because if you do that AND apply just a little bit of critical thinking (not much, like maybe enough brain power you would use to figure out how many 0.5 cups go into 1 cup), you can probably figure out the answer to your own question.

I admire your endless patience. The president gets his info from the CDC and the daily briefing. Which would include CIA info.

FOX uses the WHO when its needed as a scapegoat for the daily talking points. Its most helpful to KISS when explaining C-19 WH knowledge to those feigning ignorance.

Funny you should lecture on who needs scapegoats.  You on the left should continue to push this agenda.  Just as it was with the impeachment you're starting to make Trump look like a victim.  Keep fuckin' that chicken.
