Mary and I got our second shots today (our appointments were for next Wed., but they had 3 cancellations due to inclement weather so we offered to move up).

Any reaction?  Rox was pretty messed up for 24 hrs. on the second dose.

Good for you. Were you waiting in the dumpster or was it more civilized than Westerly suggests?

Hi Joe,

Jay Gile & his wife were volunteering at the vaccination center in Corvallis.  They both got their first shot yesterday due to some overages at the end of the day.

I had mentioned previously that a friend who's an RN had been hired by a 'large national pharmacy chain' to do vaccinations. She's been pushed back again & again. It seems like the store has had difficulty in getting the vaccine to administer, but they haven't told her anything, just 'don't come in yet'.

She also works for the county, in one of the 'old folks homes'. Being a county employee, she had someone else reach out to her and have her come to the county-run vaccination center.
She says it's very well run and organized. Shots are done by appointment, and they've been fairly thorough about making sure they have people coming in constantly. At the end of the day, if they have a couple doses left over, they have a list of eligible people who live near the location. They start calling and get enough people to come in to use up any 'defrosted' doses. None go in the trash. Everyone who gets a shot is on the 'approved' list. Whoever put it together understood the reality of leftover doses, standby recipients and the 'optics' of giving the leftovers to people who aren't supposed to get them yet.

Proof that vaccines are being thrown away left and right!

No one claims that other than you.

You're the first person on this website who claimed that vaccines are never discarded. Would you like a screenshot highlighting where you said that or do you remember?

We've literally just been through this. You posted a quote, and everyone saw you were wrong.

I never claimed that.  Again, you are lying, which is a silly thing to do on a site where everything is archived forever.

New study just released on the South African mutation. It shows the current vaccinations are not effective against that mutation. Great, so by the time everyone gets vaccinated we'll have to start all the way back over again and redo it.

One vaccine looks like it may not be effective.  One.

From the article:

"What does that mean for our vaccination program which we said will start in February? The answer is it will proceed.  From next week for the next four weeks we expect that there will be J&J vaccines, there will be Pfizer vaccines. So what will be available to the health workers will be those vaccines.”

Actually the study found that all of the vaccines tested (which includes both options in the USA) showed drastically reduced effectiveness. One vaccine showed no effectiveness and the others tested showed substantially reduced effectiveness.

remember how about 10 pages back everyone in here advocated to just give everyone one shot and say screw getting the second one on time? Just give out all the doses to everyone as a first dose and hope the 2nd will come in time (which wont happen of course)? Well yet again I was right on that point....

https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-waiting-for-second-shot-recipe-for-disaster-covid-variants-2021-2

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said while it was true that a single shot could "give some degree of protection" to people, it appeared nowhere near as strong as the powerful illness shield that two shots provides.

That's why he's not recommending giving more Americans first doses of vaccines and waiting until later on in the year to give people their second "booster" shot, a strategy that's being tried out now in the UK.

I wake up everyday and thank Cthulhu that Westerly primary occupation is posting nonsense on DZ.com, instead of something involving public health, medical research, or anything science based that goes beyond the level of a 5th grade baking soda volcano.

The AstraZeneca news out of South Africa is definitely interesting, and concerning. It shows just how much complexity is involved.

South Africa has halted their early phase rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but their decision is pretty nuanced. A trial of 2,000 individuals showed that it wasn't effective at reducing mild to moderate disease from the SA variant in younger individuals. I believe the trial participants were in their 30's.

I believe that it still reduced severe disease and death, and it is hard to extrapolate to the higher risk population.

Since the initial phase was going to health care workers, who are younger and lower risk, you really need to consider whether you give them a vaccine that shows poor protection of mild to moderate disease. There are limited doses, there are ethical constraints about giving someone a treatment shown to be ineffective for their primary risk, and then there the optics and social impacts of people getting a vaccine and then getting sick.

If they were at the stage of vaccinating seniors they may have made a different choice.
