A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the new coronavirus

Who is going to put masks on all the zoo animals now?

Can we please go back to just having an opioid crisis? At least then it was only a crisis if you were out.

One of my sisters-in-law is a supervising physician at an opioid clinic (buprenorphine). Most of their patients are on telephone supervision now, but she's going into the office for all the ones who really, really, need to come in (often mental illness related -- when the voices tell you to double your dose for the day, well, you might listen to those voices).

Opioids definitely haven't' gone away. But one of her mentally ill come-in patients was telling her last week about his encounter with a narc (" I KNEW he was a narc -- he had those narc eyes, and was staring at me!"). This was outside his apartment. So he dealt with the problem by coughing in his general direction. Said he just couldn't get away fast enough.

humph easy enough for a woman to find humor when C-19 is killing men 30% more often than women!  Kidding aside more men smoke, 3-5% more than women and use cannabis 50% more. They also work in trades welding, farming, etc which likely expose their lungs to possible damage.

And mining. Just think what will happen when it hits those areas who voted for Trump because he promised to bring back those great mining jobs.

Navy Captain Removed From Carrier, Tests Positive for Covid-19

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/05/magazine/navy-captain-crozier-positive-coronavirus.html

So the acting secNav goes to Guam. Doesn't tour the ship instead heads right to the ships internal announcement system to "injected partisan political tones into the address by attacking former Vice President Joe Biden, who has repeatedly criticized Crozier’s removal...in a profane and defensive address that one crew member described in an interview as “whiny, upset, irritated, condescending,” Modly took repeated shots at the integrity of Capt. Brett E. Crozier,... Modly said Crozier was “too naïve or too stupid to be a commanding officer”...

the acting secretary slammed China and its role in the coronavirus pandemic while taking issue with Crozier’s assertion in the leaked letter that America was not at war. “The only reason we are dealing with this right now is because a big authoritarian regime called China was not forthcoming about what was happening with this virus and they put the world at risk to protect themselves and to protect their reputations,”..

You can disobey the chain of command and take the consequences, but there is no situation where you go to the media.”

Such an action, Modly implied, could threaten the dissolution of the United States."

I fuc*#ng kid you not. Thats exactly what he did when he flew to Guam, went right to the bridge. Then without touring the ship left. Evidently C-19 isn't a concern to sailors but is to him. Full transcript.

I've been thinking about that and struggling to come up with a politically correct way of asking.

If he’s lucky Trump will send him some special drugs.

From  CNN :-

After meeting the heads of pharmaceutical companies, Trump said: "I've asked them to contact London immediately."

"They speak a language that most people don't even understand, but I understand something, that they've really advanced therapeutics and therapeutically, and they have arrived in London already," Trump said. "We've contacted all of Boris' doctors, and we'll see what is going to take place, but they are ready to go."

The reality of life in America has changed. A major recession is coming, you can bet on that. Our main hope is that by following the advice of the CDC and the WHO, as well as health organizations we can trust, we can buy enough time to finish a working vaccine.

After the vaccine is perfected, and becomes widely available, we can return to normal. In the meantime, everyone has to do their part to buy that time we need.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming: take two doses of hydroxychloroquine and we'll see you at church. MAGA!

Just read this. I don't know how much truth is in the article but it is certainly food for thought.

If hydroxychloroquine becomes an accepted treatment, several pharmaceutical companies stand to profit, including shareholders and senior executives with connections to the president. Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.

I don't know, my not being a stable genius who really gets this stuff, if hydroxychloroquine mixed, or not, with azithromycin will be miracle cure or even a fine substitute for a peyote bud and 5mg's of Viagra. But on the off chance it turns out to be more in line with the little white pills they passed out in "On the Beach" I say let's wait for some decent study results.

So what you're saying is that we need to stock up on peyote and viagra.

1,970 coronavirus deaths today in the US.

Pretty impressive for a democratic hoax that was totally under control heading towards zero thanks to April heat.

I wonder what the actual numbers are.  Cause SURELY there's no under-reporting going on.

Assuming we do the things we should, and your state does the max prevention steps...things may not return to normal until June.

I am skeptical that the worst case new deaths will be zero by June 23.

It would be interesting to see their projected cases/new cases plot.  The deaths can't peak until maybe 10-14 days after the new cases peak.  There are obviously a lot more cases than confirmed cases, and confirmed cases are a function of test availability, which makes that plot and calculation pretty loose.  In my county (Santa Clara, Bay Area), only 0.62% of the people have been tested.

Well, that's all true what you said. But the ONE thing they have a good handle on for the data is the number of daily deaths nationwide. You can be sick. You can be symptom-free (for a while anyway). You can be unaffected. But the one thing that can't hide from the data is the total deaths.

Respectfully, yes it can, and I believe it is being hidden - not through maliciousness, but mostly through poor messaging and inconsistent procedures.

I've read several pieces recently highlighting an unusual uptick in deaths attributed to pneumonia or acute respiratory syndrome, that could well be Corona related but either aren't tested due to not meeting a local criteria, or there just aren't tests available.

I trust the current US numbers barely more than the Chinese or Russian ones.

(As far as China numbers and their honesty, I wouldn't take their word that day is light, and night is dark.)

As I was saying in the other thread - several countries hate China's guts, especially Taiwan and Vietnam, and that didn't stop them from executing an effective response to the virus.

The US's failure to contain it stands independently on its own.

CDC: People should now wear some form of face mask in public.

I really don't understand this. What are they thinking?

Most facemasks don't do anything to protect you since they are not designed to stop viral particles.
Even the 'correct' masks offer only very limited (if any) protection if improperly used, especially if not combined with safety glasses and other protective clothing.
Maybe, just maybe there is limited protection of others directly in front of you if you sneeze in your mask, but even then a lot of air gets out around the edges of the mask.

And don't even get me started on people removing their masks to scratch their nose, talk to other people FTF or no the phone.....

IMO every mouthmask worn by an untrained member of the public is witholding one from a professional in a high risk job who needs it a lot more.
