This is the first time I’ve heard a mainstream politician use the term. It’s always been associated with racist right wing idiots as far as I know.

I am interested in what the right wing leaning people here feel about Trump saying that to members of Congress.

A lot of what Trump says is cringe worthy.

I usually just roll my eyes and go back to work.

He crossed the line on this one -

It wasn't even a factual statement - AOC is native born.

(Perhaps not quite as "Native" as Warren claimed . . . :D

The guy is an unpolished, immature, self important, moron that won't think before he speaks.

That doesn't mean that all he does is wrong -

He just needs to Shut The Fuck Up more often.

Actually, three of the four are native born, and the fourth is a US citizen. And I agree with your assessment.

To be fair, it does fit with Trump's long history of attacking and demeaning the USA that he would call the Federal government "a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world".

this sums it up for me  that was a stupid thing to say

I think there’s a problem when people dismiss outright racism from a world leader as ‘just being stupid’.

To me it read as if the president thinks that anyone who isn’t white and disagrees with him can’t possibly be American.

From https://www.ushmm.org/learn/introduction-to-the-holocaust/path-to-nazi-genocide/chapter-3/from-citizens-to-outcasts-1933-1938

The goal of Nazi propaganda was to demonize Jews and encourage Germans to see Jews as dangerous outsiders in their midst.”

Now lets make it relevant to today:

”The goal of Trumps propaganda is to demonize Immigrants and encourage Americans to see Immigrants as dangerous outsiders in their midst...’

it’s not a million miles away, is it?

And it still is.  It's a way to make them "other."  It's been used throughout history to rationalize injustice.

To go back to Mr. Waters take on this:

So ya thought ya
Might like to go to the show
To feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space cadet glow
I've got some bad news for you sunshine
Pink isn't well, he stayed back at the hotel
And they sent us along as a surrogate band
We're gonna find out where you fans really stand

Are there any queers in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall
There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me
Get him up against the wall
And that one looks Jewish and that one's a coon
Who let this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint and another with spots
If I had my way I'd have all of you shot!

Wendy beat me to the historical aspect (I immediately pictured the Natives vs. Irish from Gangs of New York when I saw the Tweet), but I think I’m even more bothered by the percentage of the electorate that respond to this stuff.  The fact that this calculated political strategy gets results says as much about many of us as it does about the president.

It exposes a reality that many of us thought was not as prevalent in the US.  I'm reminded of when I woke up on election day +1 and felt like I was in a different country, one that does not uphold the ideals and moralities that I grew up thinking of as our national identity.

The problem being that because he tweeted it, it is obviously a sentiment that he holds. So as Turtle wrote, he won't think before he speaks.  And because he doesn't see/feel any consequences for these gaffes from the body that is supposed to do so, the message to those Americans who may not disagree but who wouldn't think to voice the same hate speech now have in the back of their minds that this is okay.  The person in this office is supposed to be the one who upholds the ideals of our nation.  Whether he likes it or not, his tweets are policy.

This is how divisive rhetoric becomes normalized, with all the second- and third-order affects thereafter.

Expect to see another uptick in right wing violence as this sort of hatred is normalized.

Then we have Sen. Graham at first trying to rebuke him, but ends up basically joining him (bolding mine):

Quote

During a television appearance Monday morning, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) counseled Trump to focus on policy differences with the congresswomen rather than on them personally.

“Aim higher. They are American citizens. They won an election. Take on their policies,” Graham said on Fox News’s “Fox & Friends.”

During the interview, Graham called the congresswomen’s ideas “anti-Semitic” and “socialist” and said their agenda is “disgusting.”

“We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists,” Graham said, referring to Ocasio-Cortez. “They hate Israel. They hate our own country.”

Trump later tweeted selective quotes from Graham’s interview that did not include his advice to “aim higher.”

Hi TriGirl,

Me thinks you ask too much of this POTUS.

https://www.npr.org/2019/07/15/741771445/trump-continues-twitter-assault-on-4-minority-congresswomen

And, from some of his supporters:  In an interview on Fox & Friends Monday morning, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said, . . . "We all know that and this crowd are a bunch of communists."

And to be fair:  Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich., tweeted at Trump, "we must be better than comments like these. I share the political frustrations with some members of the other party, but these comments are beneath leaders."

Another Michigan GOP lawmaker, Rep. Fred Upton, tweeted that he was "appalled by the President's tweets," adding "there's no excuse." Upton also condemned what he labeled "inflammatory rhetoric from both sides of the aisle that is used to divide us."

Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., also issued a statement condemning the tweets.

PS)  What I want to hear from are our local dz.com Trump supporters.  They seem to be rather quiet on this.

Hey, Jerry --

Yes, it is good finally to see some from his party making statements. I want to see the congressional censure, though.

And yes, agreed: the silence is deafening.

Lots making statements - I haven't yet seen one agree it was racism however. It's like they have been told not to use that word.

That is why we need someone to stand up and be able to beat him in an election.

That is because it is culturism.

No other culture besides "Murica - Fuq Yah!" is and ever will be acceptable to Trump.

He is nothing without his uninformed uneducated base.

We need to find a way to educate the base, or put up a better candidate.

Don't pander to the Dems on this site. Stop feeling guilty for being Conservative. The Democrats have a much longer and vicious history of racism and they're just trying to cast a label of "Xenophobic, Misogynistic, Racist, etc. etc. in hopes that it'll stick on the right at election time. Every time they want to pay reparations for slaves; it's only because they feel guilty about their own past.

I want to hear the Navajo perspective on immigration.

What a bunch of crap. The next election will be fought in 2020, not 1960. If you need to invoke the past that the Democrats actively moved on from its because you feel guilty about what your party has become now.

Hi Keith,

IMO that is on a par with the Holocaust deniers.
