Hard Opening = Torn Canopy

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.
Had a bad day today... as the title suggests...

Can anyone give me any info on the repair work required for the rip (see attached pic), as far as tears go - it's big... but I have no idea about rigging.

Before I pass the canopy to a rigger can anyone suggest what is involved/how much it will cost approx etc

It is a Safire 2 170, around 10 years old but still like new with less than 150 jumps.

Blue skies x

Stabilizer replacement. That entire panel gets replaced.

You might want to have it inspected really good to see if there is other damage also prior to replacing it.

PD's pricing puts that at $220-280 for repairs:

Agree. However I will add I rarely see this type of repair without some auxiliary damage as well. Line attachment points (mostly center A Lines), cross ports on load bearing ribs, and outboard lines where they attached to the stabilizer are the most common.

If you send that back to the factory, That can be patched by a local Master Rigger.
I have sewn similar repairs without replacing the entire stabilizer, but it took me about an hour.

Next time you pack, clear your stabilizers.
The sewing skills are more than the average Senior Rigger can handle.

Thanks everyone for their assistance.

Packing was the problem, I rushed it, it's 100% my fault... an expensive lesson to learn.

I have sent it to a well respected rigger to take a look at. Icarus have wrote to me to say both stabilisers would need replacing if I sent it back to their factory at a cost of 700 USD. (250 per stabiliser plus VAT and labour).
