Canada to admit 340,000 immigrants a year by 2020 under new three-year plan

Better harden up your northern border America. You'll need a big beautiful wall soon.

So it will rise 10% over a two year period, involve a total of about .9% of total population on an annual basis.

as compared to Germany:

BERLIN (Reuters) - The number of people with an immigrant background in Germany rose 8.5 percent to a record 18.6 million in 2016, largely due to an increase in refugees, the Federal Statistics Office said on Tuesday.

Just over a fifth of the population - 22.5 percent - were first or second generation immigrants with at least one parent born without German citizenship, the office said...

Germany took in more than a million migrants, many fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa in 2015 and 2016.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-immigration/immigrant-population-hits-new-high-in-germany-idUSKBN1AH3EP

So Germany took in about 1.22% of its total population in a two year period, 2015-2016.

But Germany took in real refugees as compared to Canada which picks the cream of the crop so to speak. Where about 2/3(195,000 of 330,000) are "The biggest increase in newcomers will be in programs designed to lure skilled labour to Canada".

So Canada robs other countries of their best educated and highest skilled workers. In essence stealing the future from other countries. To benefit Canada's future and tax base.

Oh, and trump is all the wall the US needs on the northern border.

Increasingly, foreign students are choosing Canada over US
https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/09/16/increasingly-foreign-students-choose-canada-over/khkot6AYt9lakpIFLTNGvM/story.html

Between 20% and 27% of international students became permanent residents in the 10 years following the receipt of their first study permit, depending on the cohort of arrival.
International students from countries with a lower GDP per capita (such as India) typically had higher transition rates into permanent residence than those who came from countries with a higher level of GDP per capita (such as South Korea).
Nearly one-half (48%) of immigrants who first came to Canada between 2000 and 2004 as international students applied as principal applicants in the economic class. This compared with 30% among those who were international students between 1990 and 1994.
https://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/75-006-x/2015001/article/14299-eng.htm

So Canada plunders about 1/2 of University graduates from the poorest countries after Canada overcharges them for their university studies. Yes Canadian universities charge foreign students up to twice the rates for enrollment as the rates for Canadian students.

Canada should be labeled an outlaw pirate state.

That's because for Canadians most of their tuition cost is subsidized, foreign students pay full price.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Truth!
A few years back I considered studying at British Columbia Institute of Technology. Tuition would have been $7,000. The head of BCIT's Aviation Program explained to me that "a kid from India would pay $30,000," because the provincial government sees subsidizing trades colleges as cheaper than paying unemployment. AND well-paid technicians pay far more taxes than minimum-wage earners

Apparently Canada just decided to copy the old US immigration model. Hope it works out better for them long term than it has for us. :)

What do you think hasn't worked about it for the US? It's not perfect, but to me, immigrants bring a vitality and willingness to risk that's valuable to any economy and society.

Worked out pretty well for us. I bet 99% of the US citizens who are posting here are descendants of immigrants. I definitely am. And these immigrants worked out pretty well for us:

Albert Einstein
John Muir
Joe Pulitzer
Irving Berlin
Sergey Brin (he founded a company you may have heard of)
Levi Strauss (you may be wearing his pants)
Madeleine Albright
Arnold Schwarzenegger (and where would the US be without him?)

Yes. We had a Conservative government a few years ago that tried to change that. But Canadians were not willing to accept any change in this basic right. The same government attempted to fight the last election using immigration as a wedge issue. They were soundly defeated. The party recently had a leadership change and some of the candidates ran on an anti immigration platform. They were unsuccessful.

No issue with immigration itself, just illegal immigration and apathy towards it is where the US went wrong.

Where we went wrong was making just about all forms of previously legal immigration illegal.

If we reduced the nationwide speed limit to 5mph it would miss the point to complain about the wave of speeding violations.

Also agree. We needed to either stick with the previous laws/policy or when we went for the $$$ like Canada is now doing actually enforce the new laws and limit loopholes such as children born of illegals in country are citizens.

The biggest issue with illegal immigration is the illegals themselves are often expolited as they try to keep a low profile along with no voting rights. :(

"Loophole"?

It's a basic right. "Natural born citizen" means just that.

This was decided by the SC a long time ago (1882). Kinda funny, it was a case involving a man whose parents were Chinese immigrants, during a time when the Chinese were the "Bad guy" immigrants.

And while I agree that the exploitation of illegals is a problem, I don't understand what you mean by "no voting rights."

No non-citizen immigrant has voting rights. Legal immigrant or illegal. Only after naturalization are voting rights acquired.

In the words of a 2007 legal analysis of events following the Wong Kim Ark decision, "The parameters of the jus soli principle, as stated by the court in Wong Kim Ark, have never been seriously questioned by the Supreme Court, and have been accepted as dogma by lower courts."[9] A 2010 review of the history of the Citizenship Clause notes that the Wong Kim Ark decision held that the guarantee of birthright citizenship "applies to children of foreigners present on American soil" and states that the Supreme Court "has not re-examined this issue since the concept of 'illegal alien' entered the language".[10]

Legal immigrants at least have a path to gaining voting and full citizenship rights, the same cannot be said for illegals.

But getting back on topic, what rights other than voting do Canadian legal immigrants not have? And what additional rights do the illegal immigrants not have?

Well, any SC decision sets precedent. If it's never questioned or revisited, then it stands.
If it is questionable, then it can be revisited, and if the newer decision overturns the older one, then the new decision is the precedent.

AFAIK, there's never been any real argument against this decision.

And there are a few paths to legal status and subsequent citizenship for illegal immigrants. Not a lot, but a few.

Technically new immigrants have to wait three months for free dental, drug and comprehensive healthcare. Because of the current backlog in immigrant handling of applications that requirement has been waived.

Once they have been given a hearing and denied immigration status. Technically they are cut off. But there are free health clinics in most cities after that.

Most citizens are not entitled to free dental and most drug costs are not fully covered. So technically they have better benefits than Canadian citizens.

Most illegal immigrants who are denied in their citizenship requests are given deportation orders. Mostly because they are economic migrants and that quota has been reached for the year.

I use the term "illegal immigrants" as a descriptive term but under the Canadian immigration system there is no such term. They are merely people who cross the border, are arrested, apply for status, given free medical care, told where to go for accommodation and monetary help. Given security checks. Then released. Usually over a 2-7 day period. Depending on the point of entry.

Regular immigrants apply for immigration before entering Canadian territory. Or are students who apply during or immediately subsequent to study.

"More than 32,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Canada so far in 2017
On average, $15,000 to $20,000 is spent by different levels of government on each asylum claimant, a joint House of Commons committee heard Thursday...

Typically, eligibility is assessed right at the border, but with the spike in numbers, some interviews have been delayed by several months. Hussen said there are now 2,000 people waiting for eligibility interviews, which is a decrease, and there are almost 200 interviews scheduled daily, up from just 30....

The federal government has also provided temporary health-care coverage to more than 5,600 people who’ve crossed the border irregularly at Lacolle who have not yet had an eligibility interview, according to MacDonald. Normally, the coverage isn’t available until a claimant has been deemed eligible for refugee status."
http://nationalpost.com/news/politics/more-than-32000-asylum-seekers-have-arrived-in-canada-so-far-in-2017

Essential health care for refugee claimants in Canada is usually paid for by the Interim Federal Health Program, commonly referred to as IFHP. IFHP is administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

All IFHP beneficiaries are eligible for coverage from the date that the certificate of eligibility is issued by an IRCC or Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer.

To be eligible for the IFH Program, an individual must not be a Canadian citizen, and must belong to one of the following groups:

-Refugee claimants(among others)

1. Basic coverage
Basic coverage is similar to what Canadians receive through their provincial or territorial health insurance plans.

2. Supplemental coverage
Supplemental coverage is similar to what provincial and territorial governments provide to Canadians receiving social assistance. Coverage includes

3. Prescription drug coverage
This coverage includes most prescription medications and other products listed in provincial and territorial public drug plans.http://www.legalline.ca/legal-answers/medical-and-dental-care-for-refugees/

Asylum seekers get health-care benefits first, eligibility questions later

No. Not in theory. Healthcare is actually a provincial responsibility, not a national plan. When a Canadian, or a legal resident changes place of residence to a different province they must register with that province's health insurance system to be covered. If you are traveling within Canada your home province will cover you up to what they would pay at home. You could be out of pocket for some of it. Foreign nationals traveling or visiting are not covered. Refugees will have some services covered by the Federal government.

Most of them, actually.

Lots of illegals use stolen or faked IDs. That allows them to work "above the table", where their employers withhold taxes.
Interestingly, those taxes are actually a windfall for the government. Those people will not be able to claim SS benefits for what was paid in, and they will not claim refunds on the taxes paid.

Others can obtain a "Tax ID Number" and use it to pay their taxes. There are clear rules that the IRS cannot tell the CBP about them, with certain, limited exceptions. Those taxpayers can and do file returns to claim refunds.
