Trump likes to use the term "fake news" to describe any news he doesn't agree with, that isn't politically correct enough for him. Puerto Rico in trouble? Fake news! He didn't have the biggest inauguration of all time? More fake news!

So in the spirit of looking for fake news I figured I would start a thread about _actual_ fake news, as in news that is actually false, rather than just not politically correct. To start off:

The arrest of a 29-year-old Latino man this weekend on suspicion of starting a small fire in California’s scorched wine country ignited a firestorm of its own on right-wing media sites whose articles linked him – without evidence – to the catastrophic fires that have killed at least 28 people in the area.

Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano forcefully shot down the allegations at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

“There is a story out there that he’s the arsonist in these fires,” Giordano said. “That’s not the case. There’s no indication he’s related to these fires at all. ... I wanted to kill that speculation right now, so we didn’t have things running too far out of control.”

Right-wing websites including Breitbart and InfoWars Tuesday each published stories on the Sunday arrest of Jesus Fabian Gonzales, whom sheriff’s deputies arrested on a single count of arson.

“The U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) issued a detainer request on the Sonoma County Jail for Jesus Fabian Gonzalez (sic), who was arrested Sunday on suspicion of arson in Wine Country fires that have killed at least 40 residents,” says the lead paragraph of stories published on both InfoWars and Breitbart.

There were several fires in the region, and it is not clear what role the fires Gonzales allegedly set played in the overall disaster.

Homan’s public statement highlights the lack of cooperation from Sonoma County officials and the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the region:

California Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed into law a bill that makes California a sanctuary state.

Glad America finally got some real news about why there is a need for deportation and not sanctuary cities. Seems like these kinds of people do not belong in your country if they do not respect the chance to be there and make a life for themselves.

Ooh I am not familiar with many news sources from over there, just saw it pop up and Bill had just mentioned it.

So is it not true, is an illegal not a suspect, and did the government not say that they have deported him twice successfully, but now the California government that is set up is protecting him from the Federal government now? Or is it all a lie?

Is what is troubling. The federal government wants this guy, but an American city is getting in the way, and not cooperating, even going as far as letting the guy out of jail without informing them on multiple occasions. How can this be?

What is not true is that an illegal immigrant started the wine country fires. As the original Breitbart article claimed. Even the later edit - "it is not clear what role the fires Gonzales allegedly set played in the overall disaster" - is a lie. It is quite clear, and was explained by the Sonoma County Sheriff.

I don't think so from what I understand, but it seems it is up before some courts and some challenges, might be awhile until we pull our heads out....errrr...figure this out legally.

He was arrested for arson. That means he is a suspect in starting a fire.

The right wing idiocracy then decided, without any evidence or statement from the authorities, that he must have started all the fires.

On Sunday, Oct. 8, Fox News Channel aired a story about John Garofalo, a glass artist who created a presidential glass seal in the hopes of gifting it to President Trump.

Garofalo claimed he was a Vietnam veteran, a member of the first U.S. Navy SEAL team, and a decorated war hero who was awarded two Purple Hearts.

Unfortunately, all of Garofalo's claims turned out to be untrue. The fact is that he did not serve in Vietnam. He was never a U.S. Navy SEAL. Even though he showed us medals, Garofalo was not awarded two Purple Hearts or any of the other nearly two dozen commendations he claimed to have received, except for the National Defense Service Medal.

It is true that Garafalo is a glass artist and a veteran. He served in Spain and he gifted two presidential seals to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Over the last two weeks, we've worked with Garofalo's family and the National Personnel Records Center to get to the bottom of a military past that Garofalo had claimed to be covert.

We apologize to our viewers, especially veterans and servicemen and women.






This was after they did enough work to create the story, paid the travel to send out a national reporter and gave the story a prime time slot on their Sunday programming. Other vets pointed out the errors but they seem to have left it online for days to continue to get social media likes and shares anyways

No one is saying that he's an angel, or not even guilty of something. And any guy who lights fires to keep warm when it's dry, windy, and fire-y out deserves to be arrested just for being stupid and negligent.

The objection is to the Breitbart story that said he was being arrested in "the fires," thereby implying that he was in significant degree responsible for the current firestorm. They like to point out possibly guilty minorities, and give more benefit of doubt to equally possibly guilty non-minorities. It's intellectually dishonest, and race-baiting.
