HIV and HPV

Why should he?

I worked in the clinical field for years utilizing universal precautions and I did not know what HPV was until about a year before I retired. One of my female counselors told me during a coffee break conversation.

Because we shouldn't elect ignorant boobs to be President, that's why. You don't give a crap about science, outside of omni-science I suppose, so you get a pass. But a President ought to know a little something about things that affect the health of young girls which includes having a considered opinion on vaccination.

Because it’s 2018 and awareness of STDs is high school knowledge nowadays?

Teenagers should not know more than the POTUS :S

>Why should he?

Because people who make decisions for the USA should not make those decisions out of ignorance?

Because responsible parents know what their children need to be vaccinated against?

Because they are two very, very different things?

Do you find it coencidental that Trump is the first president in 50 years without a science adviser?

the more likely scenario is that Trump felt to himself that he KNOWS everything that there is to know and "I got this" attitude.

The people that would have prepared him for the piece and advised him on the issues, done the research, gave him the information that he needs to be effective in his discussions? Those people were drained out as part of the unnecessary swamp.

Trump got this, he is the narcissistic sociopath that can do no wrong and even when he is caught 100% with his pants down, his supporters are behind him and whatever he said was fine with them.

Certainly it is fine with Trump himself because he has a very big brain and lots of words.....

Vaccines and the Trump Administration

Writing recently in the New York Times, infectious disease physician Peter Hotez warned: “It’s looking as if 2017 could become the year when the anti-vaccination movement gains ascendancy in the United States and we begin to see a reversal of several decades in steady public health gains. The first blow will be measles outbreaks in America.”

These fears have everything to do with the new administration in Washington, DC. During the campaign, Donald Trump met with discredited British physician Andrew Wakefield, who first alleged a connection between the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism in a now-retracted Lancet article. Then, in a September 2015 primary debate, Trump himself suggested that vaccines cause autism. In January, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, known for his engagement with vaccine conspiracies, emerged from a meeting with the President-elect to claim that he will lead a new vaccine safety commission.

Trump claims vaccines and autism are linked but his own experts vehemently disagree
The president has tweeted more than 20 times claiming – falsely – there is a link between vaccines and autism
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/trump-vaccines-autism-links-anti-vaxxer-us-president-false-vaccine-a8331836.html

Yet his understanding of the issues has failed to ascertain the difference between HIV and HPV. For which he asked the same person, the same question, on different occasions.

Absolutely astounding that our President didn’t know the difference.

Doesn't surprise me at all. The man is an arrogant ignoramus - a perfect exemplar of Dunning-Kruger.

According to the article, Bill Gates stated that the conversation between them took place in Dec 2016. He would not be expected to be that knowledgeable about the disease at that time. It seems as though he was asking a question of someone (Gates) whom he thought had reasonable information. And that seems to be a reasonable thing to do.

Both STDs have frequently been in the news over the past several years. He absolutely should be expected to have known the difference less than two years ago. Any informed US citizen would have known the difference.

I guess it depends on where you live. I worked as a clinician in the west central FL area and I do not recall ever seeing an article in the news about HPV. HIV was a daily concern but no one discussed HPV.

Seriously? HPV, it's connection to Cervical Cancer, the vaccine and all the arguments that accompany that have been in and out of the news for over a decade.

HPV is the formal name for genital warts. You've heard of those, right?

And I have to say that the idea of someone who fucks porn stars not knowing about STDs is hilarious.

The idea that the President-elect doesn't know the difference between HPV and HIV is frightening. I thought he was a 'genius'.

It depends much more on one remaining informed about current events and their relevance in the real world. The alt-right propaganda outlets probably didn't give the topic much coverage.

If your boss didn't know the difference - and was making policy decisions on how his employees took precautions against infectious disease in the course of their work - would it concern you?

You don’t recall a certain GOP candidate in 2008, days before winning the Iowa primary, announcing that the HPV vaccine can cause mental retardation in young girls?

Not just a President-Elect, but one that has for some time appeared to take a personal interest in the vaccine conspiracy theories not knowing what one of the most highly reported on vaccines in recent years is actually for.

Which really draws the question - does this mean he thought there was an extant vaccine against HIV?:S

Keep in mind that his base is pulled from the less educated side of the populace. Ignorance, to many of them, is a plus.

Why should he?

.

Because it's something that's taught in middle school? Seriously, I took a health class that discussed sex, STDs, pregnancy and the like in 8th grade. Anyone who made it even partway through high school should know the basics about STDs. It's just common knowledge. Not knowing the basic difference between two STDs is like not knowing the difference between a passenger car and an SUV.

That is my point. It did not concern our work. I suspect that it played a zero part in real estate development and contract negotiation as well.
