Trump's attack on NATO

Recommended Posts

Just yesterday he launched another one of his outrageous tirades against the west and in favour of Russia. Today in the US news the story has all but disappeared. Meanwhile media in the rest of the allied world is reporting on the polite way he was told to fuck right off.

Meanwhile, the orange would be tyrant is claiming the world has agreed to buckle under. While NK throws water in his face by not attending the meeting about repatriating war dead.

The amount of winning is getting tiresome.

You must have missed the interview where the head of NATO thank Trump for his leadership!

The heads of the member states have a different opinion. But yes, the military leaders of all countries support more military spending. That goes without saying.

Okay, so if that is true, why are the member states stating that they will now increase their spending to meet their promised obligations?

thank God we got a leader that's going to call the deadbeats out and get things fixed.

You mean, they're promising to do what they already promised to do? But they aren't currently doing what they already promised to do, so by definition their promises aren't reliable. Why is this promise different?

Did the NK thing not teach you to wait and see what actually happens before declaring victory?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

I can't figure out what bad thing will happen to the US if NATO folds. This seems to be the ultimate case of once the government starts a program they never let it go.
It was incredibly valuable when it was doing its sole mission, containing the Soviet Union. But it worked, it's done. Thanks to NATO and other assets the Soviet Union dissolved nearly thirty years ago and is no longer a threat to the US.

Justin Trudeau said today that Canada will not be increasing defense spending at all. Trump has made it politically poisonous for any of the NATO leaders to do so.

More to the point, the world seems to be saying that the real problem is the huge size of the US military spending. Instead of everyone else spending more what needs to happen is for New Sparta to spend less.

Just watched some interesting interviews with people from your country. People in power. People in the government. They'll had good things to say about Trump!

Know you want to talk about unkept promises? You mean like the promise Obama made when he said we could keep our doctor in our plans.

Sorry sir, But sometimes people have to be called out for their lies. Trump's doing that and you don't like it. And for that simple fact I like it a lot!

I just watced that interview with him. And the reason he's not going to raise spending is because you're already meeting your obligations. And he had a lot of nice things to say about Trump and his leadership. And he supported his meeting with Putin coming up! Got you got to hate that don't you?

Well, it's nice that you decided to believe Trudeau's spin. Maybe Trump will too. Canada seems to have a leader who understands diplomacy.

Well that's a twist! I thought you were just saying a little bit ago that he was being berated by leaders of other countries.

Trump said good things about Kim Jong Un.

Does that mean the US government thinks Kim is good?

Russia, Not North Korea, Greatest Threat to U.S., Says Pentagon's Top Military Officer
7/24/17
Russia, not North Korea, is the greatest threat to the United States, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff has said.

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, Marine Corps General Joe Dunford listed Russia’s military modernization program, its nuclear and cyber capabilities and its actions in Georgia, Crimea and eastern Ukraine as evidence of the security threat posed by the country.

Dunford’s stance on Russia has not changed since a June 2015 Senate hearing ahead of his appointment to the chairman position. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, who told Congress in January that Russia was the “principal threat” for the U.S., also named North Korea as the “most urgent and dangerous threat” in a statement to the House Armed Services Committee quoted in Reuters.

James Mattis unveils new US military strategy focused on threat from Russia and China, not terrorism
US Defence Secretary James Mattis says countering China's rapidly expanding military and an increasingly aggressive Russia are now the main focus of America's national security, outpacing the threat of terrorism.

Top US nuclear commander: Russia is 'the only existential threat to the country right now'

Russia Is a Bigger Threat to U.S. Than North Korea or ISIS: Ex-NATO Commander
10/20/17
Russia remains a greater threat to U.S. security than North Korea or the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) because President Vladimir Putin still views the world in “Cold War terms,” according to an ex-NATO commander.

Wesley Clark, a retired four-star U.S. military general, tells Newsweek that President Donald Trump’s flip-flopping on whether the United States will uphold NATO’s key self-defense principle and his affability towards Putin is “very confusing to the American public.”

All of which Trump's comments today seem to indicate and agree with.

Germany's coziness with Putin is more dangerous than anything NATO is seeing right now

Merkel is getting rich because of that pipeline agreement. But nobody seems to give a fuck.

But Trump's coziness with Putin? Non issue! Nothing to see here!

>Merkel is getting rich because of that pipeline agreement. But nobody seems to give a fuck.

Because she's not.

Trump is getting rich due to his channeling taxpayer money to his businesses - and that's very well documented. Funny how that's never bothered you.

Canada does not spend 2% of his GDP on military. Nor should it.

There is no public support in Canada for more military spending. Every new weapons system is debated endlessly. Current spending is 1.23% of GDP and regardless of promises to increase it to 2%. Its not likely to happen. Canadians will have a free national drug program long before defense spending is 2% of GDP.

Canadians support peacekeeping and NATO operations like the current deployments to Latvia. Canada has additional training and support operations to Ukraine. Which is also supported.

The conservative party(like republicans)of the last government could not write the check for a new F-35 purchase. So the current liberal (like dems) Trudeau government bought the castoff F-18's of the Australian air force.

Part of that calculation was Boeing's trade dispute filing on the CS300 jet built by Bombardier.
